It wouldn't shock me if they keep Petrino.
Petrino would be a good hire. If we rid ourselves of nepo baby Beamer, maybe we will then copy Arkansas again and do what has brought us the most success in the past: hire someone who has previously succeeded as a Head Coach.

I've said it before and I'll say it again: we are mediocre because we tolerate mediocrity.
True. The proof is in the pudding. We hired a failed SEC Head Coach to lead our football program. WE followed that inexplicable hire with another head scratcher: we replaced him with someone who was never deemed good enough to be made either a OC or DC. smh.

We are dedicated to duplicating what Clemtech did with Dabo, but how long will Donati go along this is the question?

I know you are right. But could the hiring authorities here have been more stupid? Seriously. Dabo is coaching in a league where most schools put more emphasis on basketball. Do you think that Dabo wants to coach in the SEC? I remember very well Dabo's response when asked if Clemson was going to the SEC. "We are not leaving. Clemson IS the ACC".

With this many openings now you're going to see upcoming guys from small schools get hired with massive contracts. Then the big names will start to get even more massive deals to lock them up.
I’m not so sure about that. If you’re a high profile school that just got rid of a seasoned coaching winning >70% of his games (as have), are you really going to take a swing with a young coach?

I think these top programs are going to pillage other established programs, which is going to make this particular offseason even more interesting.

Who will they pillage from, though? Kirby ain't going anywhere. Same for Day and Lanning. Perpetual coaching candidate Kiffin doesn't seem likely to move. Elko has no reason to leave A&M. DeBoer's staying put.

Maybe Heupel is in play? I don't think he's won enough at UT for him to be considered a prime candidate for anyone.

Drinkwitz will certainly be in play, but Missouri isn't a top program.

I don't really know of too many coaches at established programs who have incentive to move.

I just saw a Newsweek article naming Dabo as a target. Insert puzzled emoji here.

I don't think there is a coaching shortage.

Guys like Gus Malzahn, Alex Golesh, Clayton White, Clark Lea, Brent Key, Kendal Briles, and Mike Shanahan are going to get a shot at these jobs.

No shortage of coaches, but if you're looking at TOP coaches, yeah. I mean, if you've got one big job open, you can imagine a top head coach hopping programs. But you're not getting 4 or 5 top head coaches hopping in one cycle.

I don't really see Lea leaving Vandy. That's his alma mater. However, I'm sure he realizes that Pavia is the key to their success, so they are likely looking to drop back to typical Vandy status next season. Pre-Pavia, Vandy was typical Vandy under Lea. So maybe he strikes while the iron is hot?

Key for sure and Golesh will get offers I'll imagine.

Given the buyouts being thrown around, I would be inclined to "strike while the iron is hot" if i was Lea.

Wonder if somebody hires Gruden? There are going to be a ton of big openings. Freeze is expected to be canned any day now.

Gruden has been going to Tennessee since Fulmer was fired.
Probably wont be hired by a college team (or pro) but there are few names available for these openings. Gruden's in his 60s now and has a pro resume but coached for the Vols obviously decades back

I think people overlook the ages of a lot of these coaches. Kelly is 64. With a $50million buyout, he isn't going to be looking for work very hard. Freeze is 56, not old, but his buyout and what he has made coaching ensure that he isn't going to be needing a job right away, if ever. Malzahn is 59, Shanahan is 73, none of them need money.

I think you are all correct that there are too many really good coaching positions open for Beamer to be fired. However it’s clear some changes need to be made below him. I’m not in the know enough to suggest someone for the OC position. My guess is some of you have coaches in mind that you like and think would fit at Carolina.
Another question I have is considering the year he is having is it possible that Sellers might return?

It will be fun to watch the off season moves. Will LSU go after an established head coach or go the hot assistant route? (Briles)

Truthfully, ACC football is more in line with our commitment to football. We are either not willing or are unable to go all in with what it takes to be nationally relevant in that sport. Now woman's basketball is a different story. As Spurrier would say, "It is what it is".
I think that, if we were able, we'd be willing.

Key is also at his alma mater and I don't see him leaving anytime soon. He doesn't strike me as one to chase a dollar somewhere else to climb the ladder. I think he's enjoying the hell out of building something at his alma mater. Not sure about his current contact but I'm sure he will receive a raise and extension. He will take GT to the playoff this year.

I'm reading that you are saying we are, in essence, an ACC football program playing in the SEC. That is what I think we are.

Yes, I joked earlier about "SEC money". I was remembering the multiple threads about how the new TV contract was going to put us on such solid footing. And yet here we are, struggling with yet another buyout.

I wonder if we could ever get the big value teams to break off and leave, so there could be a division of college football where we could compete.

I like your thinking. Several years ago I would not have wanted to go that route. But, today, I'm open to that. On the other hand, I suspect we have a Mickey Mouse of a Head Coach. If we got us a real Head Football Coach, who could identify and hire quality assistants, we might could be competitive. But, as long as we have Coach (and I use that term loosely) Shane Beamer, we won't know for sure.

I've said before that Key reminds me of another Georgia Tech alumnus who was our Head Coach, the late Jim Carlen. We would have become a national power in the 80s and 90s had not corrupt President Jim Holderman fired him for non-football reasons. As much as I liked Spurrier, Holtz and Morrison, Jim Carlen is my favorite USC football coach ever.

I also liked the way Carlen spoke his mind. He did not care what anyone thought. Carlen said , "I'm a Republican." He did not care if a recruits family was of another party. :D He was darn good recruiter. He recruited George Rogers. I really liked Carlen a lot. We missed out.

Had two 8-4 seasons with Rogers. About .500 otherwise. Seems pretty normal given our history.

Yes but, if you recall, we had never won 8 games in one season until Carlen did it. And that 1984 season when we went up as high as number 2 in the nation? Those were his recruits that accomplished our first 10 win season. The offensive line, in particular, was VERY good. He had the program moving in the right direction until Holderman pulled the rug.
