The classy way, the way it was meant to be, in a manner that makes the ghost of Abner Doubleday weep with pride. THEY tell YOU what's acceptable and what's not, bleu. You got that, baseball rent-a-cop?
I think it was in the 6th. Very close pitch called a ball, catcher had something to say and ump immediately came around to brush the plate. Corndogs came out with a big cheer and commentator said something about cleaning it so he could see it.
Anyway, it was clear that upm was cleaning the plate so he could deliver his little lecture without "showing up" the catcher. I've been on both sides of this little charade (lecturee/lecturer). I'm suprised they replayed it.
And of course the announcer blasted the umpire, saying there was no need to show up a "kid". Of course the ump didn't show him up at all and the only way anyone knew about it is because he was wearing an espn microphone.
Exactly. Blue was being respectful because no one in the stadium knew what was going on... Which is the point. No way an umpire lets that kind of bitching go, though.
I didn't hear it during live action, don't think it went out over the air, but I commented at the time that the catcher was getting an axx-chewing. Then an inning or 2 later I saw/heard it replayed. Low rent move to replay it.
Every time I've heard the umps say anything they've always been really nice to the players and even the coaches. That could be because they're wired and know what they say will be heard by all. But they seem to be enjoying the games and want the players to enjoy it too. Remember when one of the players through his helmet down when he was called out (in another game). The umpire cautioned him in a fatherly way that he could be ejected, but he let it ride.
