I agree wholeheartedly on THE DEFENSE! Its been lacking since '15.....No one references it much, but think of the staff K had w/Collins,Capel and Wojo...No question we have a fine group now, but man thats a transition....OFC

And even in '15 the defense wasn't good until very late. Really, since 2011, maybe a little in 2013, we haven't been what I would call 'solid' defensively. Ironically, both of those squads were very veteran-laden clubs.

Even I'm impressed. I'm in the camp that Roy needs to successfully recruit more OAD guys, but he's done an excellent job at utilizing what he has. Maye is a worker, and I'm proud of him.

And props to you guys for congratulating him. It's probably a tough pill to swallow.

You over here chanting tarrrrrrr is a little hard to swallow. But I guess it's not as piss poor as hitting Rupp Rafters right after their loss gloating.

Luke Maye's dad, Mark Maye, played QB for the Heels back in the '80s. He was always going to UNC.
Dattier I think you missed the point 1156jack was making. He wasn't saying that K missed on landing recruit Luke Maye. He was saying that K would never recruit a player like Maye because he wants OAD players. Its like Dukehokie said, at this point in Coach K's career he wants to win and win now. I don't think Luke maye would ever see the court at Duke for that reason.

True, until State and Miami exposed us in '15 (Sunday afternoon and Wed nite back to back games), we didnt play really DUKE LOCK DOWN D. I like to think Amile's D on Kaminsky was a huge part of us taking the title game when Jah was in foul trouble...

The reason Luke May is not at Duke right now is that Coach K has embraced OAD. The quality of the recruiting has improved dramatically as a consequence. In years gone by Coach K had had many Luke Maye level recruits and they did just fine.
Roy may have also embraced the OAD philosophy but due to the scandals that have been hovering like a black cloud over Chapel Hill for several years he simply hasn't been able to get Harrison Barnes types of recruits for a while.
Pretty spot on with everything you said there.

Roy has a chance to make history: Win a natty, and Lose Two in the same year....I truly think if UNC DOES win it, the COI will feel less sympathetic when punishing them.

I didn't chant 'tarrrr'

What do you mean? And I didn't gloat. I genuinely tried to show some decent sportsmanship.

I respect this guy. Roy is smart enough to play his bench guys just enough to keep their confidence up. Duke would never be able to have a Luke Maye come in and play a game like today. Its unfortunate.
Yeah instead Harry comes in and airballs a 12 foot fall-away left handed jump hook. That's all on coach K

Its not about the top flight guys. You have to play them for the most part. Its about the mid-tier guys like Javin and Jack White. These are good players that K just refuses to work into the lineup.

Its a valid point....I like both those kids and Vrank too, and would like to see them get more PT. Its hard to justify criticizing the BEST EVER COACH who has spoiled us with a fistful of nattys. However at the end of the day this year I think we would have been better off playing more guys....We were totally wore down playing only 7 basically against SC...

Yep. Take away 2 Nattys and wins from 93-09. Fine by me.

When you do five out of six times on the biggest stage it is very comparable
Sure. Lets compare a player hitting two timely 3 pointers, having a huge hustle play to give his team possession in the final minute, and hitting a game winning buzzer beater to an 80% free throw shooter hitting 5 free throws.

So after all Harry had been through you don't consider him a "mid-tier" guy at present? Also, you would've been cool playing Javin and Jack in the ACC semi final when Ole Roy sat Berry for 15 minutes even though that would've cost us the ACC title? Another "hindsight 20-20 guy" I presume.

Its not about any one specific situation. Its about giving your mid-tier players valuable minutes throughout the season so they are capable of things like Maye's performance yesterday. When you give mid-tier players experience throughout the season and are basically forced to play them because of injury, foul trouble, or someone just having a terrible game, they are equipped to actually help the team. Although Grayson was a highly recruited player, that is the reason he was able to come in help us win the championship game in 2015. If K was to do this with less talented players for once, who knows what they would be capable of.

Yeah..Duke never has bench guys come in and have huge moments in the NCAA tournament. Good thing Grayson Allen started the whole season and was our best player every game in 2015.

Please follow the thread, not just the last comment. I am not talking about 5 stars and future NBA players. I am talking about the 3 and 4 star role players who barely see the court. Its not a coincidence that we have more transfers than anyone else in the country.

Sorry...I will work on my board etiquette...I didn't see that point had been made a bunch since your first post.

As for the transfer thing it seems to me Like Maye just proves that it is kinda the kids faults. I get that it's easy to blame K etc. For not playing guys, but what if....Let's say Semi had stayed at Duke...Wouldn't he have developed? I mean all of our guys develop, some better than others, a lot of the guys who leave are nothing like Maye, because he stayed. He could've left when UNC brought Bradley in because he was worried about PT. But he didn't. I think the lesson there is to the players. Remember a few years ago when Tokoto claimed UNC wouldn't help him improve his shooting? You think Jackson , Berry and Maye have that issue? It's about the players willingness to work. Maye should be commended for not transferring regardless of new recruits. If some Duke guys would stick it out they'd get their moments too.

Imagine if Ryan Kelly had transferred for these very reasons. I'm all for criticizing the staff as appropriate, but it's not ALL on them. Semi's name gets thrown out a lot. He left and two years later, two years he had a great season for SMU where he could be the man and get all the shots- good on him. Good on him for listening to what the staff was telling him all along.

Bottom line is hats off to Luke Maye. Unc does things their way and K and duke do things another. Just two years ago the shoe was on the other foot. We were in another final four and winning another championship. We were the fan base (some of us, not all) saying this offseason that UNC was done if they didn't win it last year- losing Brice and Paige while we bring in on paper one of if not the best recruiting classes in the country. Gloating that unc would struggle all season long.

This rivalry is cyclical, it goes up and down. Right now they're up- but we are nowhere near as down as they were when we were up if that makes sense. Emotions are high- understandable when your part of the biggest rivalry in the game. Let the dust settle, they will bask in their glory and they should. We don't need to, because of their success, just start crucifying our staff and players, past and present, because they're having success. They do things their way we do things ours and guess what- both work and are historically supremely successful.

I think we are all on edge until UNC loses. I, for one, have zero faith in Oregon, Gonzaga, or SC stopping this train. But then again, I had all those teams losing in the first weekend, so what do I know.

Congrats to Maye. He shot that last shot like it was a first 5 minutes type shot. Didn't look rushed or nervous. It was pretty sweet.

Thank you! I am a big Jack White fan. I loved his enthusiasm throughout the year, and his comment before the year: "I am not going to redshirt." Hope he gets some meaningful PT next year as I told Mac9192... OFC

We wouldn't feel as bad as we do, or at least I wouldn't, if those sobs (Holes) had lost by now. Then we've counted on the OFC's to make the loss happen and they've failed us miserably. Then a walk on hits the game winner. What's next?

Fortunately, UK fans have some experience on how to handle a buzzer beater tournament loss.

It's cool Maye was in class today, but wasn't he supposed to be? I mean, seriously, it's that big of a deal? Or are people surprised he went to class at all?
