I knew that Arizona choked fairly often in the tourney and screwed up my bracket a few times. However, until I looked it up a while ago, I had no idea that, under Lute, Zona had lost 9 times in the first rd and another 3 in the second. Good Lord, that dude sucked as a coach.

Jim Boeheim and Jim Calhoun. Both had major struggles in the tourney for years until breaking through.

comparisons.

Olson went to the Final Four in his 5th year at zona
Calhoun went to the Sweet 16 and Elite 8 in his first 5 years
Boeheim went to three Sweet 16s in his first 5 years.

and all three pretty much have taken their teams to the tourney every year for a long time.

Im not that hung up on how far you go in the tourney as much as some, but this has to be the worst comparison

have had shitloads more talent than us, too. And all 3 have had multiple embarrassing first /second round losses. Particularly Olsen.

if you have an occasional embarrassing loss when you go to the tournament every year, advance quite often, and win national championships.

cause losing in the first round 9 times with a ton of future NBA players is what I and many others would consider choking and bad coaching.

Jim Beiheim coached 25 years before he won a national championship (and it took a once in a generation type one and done player to do it). If you and coach34 were syracuse fans you woulda been calling for his head in year 5 and 6 when they went to the NIT.

went to 3 Sweet 16s in his first 4 years there. Only a dumbass would call for his head.

Lute Olson has been to a Sweet 16 or better 11 times. I'd call that quite often.

Again, I wouldn't really mind the defeats we've suffered in the tourney under Stans if he'd mix in a run and if he wouldn't have missed the tournament in 2007.

Those 3 out of the first 4 years he went to the "sweet sixteen" were before expansion, so it means his team won one game in the tournament, kinda like Stansburys teams have recently.

It took Boeheim 10 years before he won more than 1 game in the NCAA tournament. In those 10 years his teams went to the NIT twice as well.

So it seems like a pretty similar first 10 years to Stansbury, a bunch of NCAA tournaments, never more than 2 wins, a couple of NITs.

In Lute Olsens first 10 years as a coach, he missed the NCAA tournament the first 5 years, lost in the first round 2 years, won one game 2 years, and made it to the final four one year. So one out of ten years his team won more than one post season game.

So what was it you were saying again?

to the final four in his sixth year at Iowa. That was year 2 of taking Iowa to 5 straight tourneys which got him hired by Arizona.
And Olson would've gone to the tourney in his lone year at LB State but they obviously didn't have an automatic bid or didn't go for some reason. That comparison is ridiculous.

Boeheim went to the tourney 8 years out of 10. I would never say a word if we did that. We would have gone 6 out of 10 but the underacheivement of 07 killed that opportunity. I can deal with early exits if we are constantly having good seasons and going nearly every year. And likewise, I can deal with ****** performances in season if we are advancing in the tournament. But point to you for noting the 48 team tourney.

As I said, the tourney performance doesn't really bother me for the sake of not going. Ya'll do look like fans comparing Beamer to Croom. The tourney performances bother me b/c it usually signifies Rick's weaknesses. Bad half court offense and bad losses that get us seeded poorly.
