Top 5 teams in Illinois high school football history? What they are doing to teams should be outlawed! The score they put up on HF.....LWE should be in the Big Ten!? With the demise of LWN could not have worked out better for LWE!?

If they are hoisting the trophy the Saturday after Thanksgiving, they are certainly worth consideration. Somebody in another thread contended that their 2’s could make the playoffs. I dont think that is far fetched.

Tap the brakes folks. The original Lincoln-Way High School had some fantastic teams and coaches which led to the 4 school expansion and splitting up of resources and talent as the district grew. Over zealous construction of LW West and LW North led to 4 pretty strong football programs. The closing of LW North and subsequent restructuring has left the district with 3 strong programs. LWE since the original split with LWHS has been the torch bearer, with original LW coaches , has been blessed to have made the playoffs every year they have fielded a team, originally as a Frosh,Soph., Junior school only. Great program and if you are talking programs , I would agree they are top 10 with an upward arrow. Keep in mind they have only been around since 2001. Looking at history leaves some pretty impressive numbers from a bunch of fantastic programs out there in the Land of Lincoln. The sample size for LWE is small compared to programs that have been around since the early 1900’s.

Always the voice of reason my friend.

To be clear the post didn’t say top 5 program he said top 5 team. Now that is debatable because their have been a bunch of great teams including my favorite East team in 2005. That said East is making a name in Illinois and it appears they don’t have plans of going away anytime soon.

Agreed Newt. Pretty sure this is not a LWE supporter claiming top 5 team status. If we would want to pontificate further a time reference would have to be inserted to set parameters for the discussion. Best of what decade? Best a vintage MC63 may have seen? Best that Crossbones has seen? Best that Illininutt has seen? Recent times in 8A? How about Lockport and MS back to backs. Loyola? Start the discussion folks. A ton of great teams from EStL to Loyola to fill a journal.

True LWE guy. Beast is a huge favorite this year. I know AJ is a year older, but first you have to win, then you compare last year vs this year. After that you can discuss all time lists. There are East St teams, mid 80’s rita’s, early 90’s Richards, late 90’s Wheaton, 3 peat Maine South, Riley led WWS, a dozen JCA and MC teams. Pump the breaks a bit

Do football followers at LWE like you think this team is better than last years squad? Watching last years D line was the most impressive unit I have seen in HS football. I know that is only 1 component of a defense and a team, but only needing to rush 4 for pass and still stop run was the most impressive unit I have seen.

They run the exact same defense as last year. Last years D Line was extraordinary but this team is at least as good. The D as a whole is definitely better than last years squad.

That is surprising, Devin O’Rourke was the top recruit or at worst top 3 recruit in Illinois last year and the other DE was fantastic as well. Won’t doubt your analysis because the sum of all parts is always greater than an individual or two. I really don’t think there is a team that close to Beast this year

Now I'm "vintage" -- that's great. I love it.

Although I didn't actually see them play, the 1950 Caravan was considered by Taylor Bell to be the best Chicago area team he ever saw.

Deanofselection is probably the best informed MC guy I've ever known. I'll yield to him.

It’s aweful tough to compare HS teams from totally different eras with a gap as large as 60-70 years. Hell that 1950’s MC team was probably playing with Ignizio helmets back then and maybe two guys over 210 lbs. half the playoff teams in 7A and 8A would eat their lunch if there was a time machine that brought them to 2018 in front of Gately stadium for a game today.

So true! I have a Bears-Lions game program from 1934, and there are 2 guys that weigh more than 250

What’s the deal with Henning? I know he had off season hip surgery and missed the first few games of the season but when he has played how has he done? Hip surgery isn’t something you just bounce back from. Will he be healthy for the playoffs?

Time also tells the tale. Our “massive” line averaged 250 in 1990. That is dwarfed by many teams today.

Four dudes played D1 line from that group - not many 250 pound linemen play D1 these days.

I would guess we will see one of our 2 missing running backs back for round one. The other for round 2 if we make it past St. Charles East. AJ has an injury not related to his hip surgery. When he has played it is the cherry on top of the hot fudge sundae. Not what the rest of 8A wants to hear.

Jcrewx7 - I can understand your hesitancy to state better than 2017. The offense is the best LWE has fielded to date...with an option to add AJ Henning when healthy.

True, but I’d take those scrappy old timers in their prime in a street fight over the kids nowadays. Size, speed and skill of today’s kids can’t be argued. But those old guys were wirey, uncaged brawlers on a football field. They didn’t have trainers, specialties or combines. Just grit.

Ignazio has the scars to prove it.

If he said program, I think that is a much closer issue.

From what I saw of Lwe this season, which was far less than normal, they were great. But 35 years of great teams...is a hard group to crack into.

Let’s reconvene the Monday after Thanksgiving, then we can compare. But until then they look awfully good. Go East

I would rather make the drive to Edwardsville than take that 2 mile walk from the train station parking lot.
Ironic isn’t it that Edwardsville has a palace for a sports complex, football field of dreams, concessions and a jumbotron. GBW has a drainage ditch for a playing surface, parking only your chauffeur could appreciate, and a field turf practice football field. If there is a decision maybe bring your lawn chairs and we will play on the practice field. If’s.
