MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (Sept. 20, 2017) – West Virginia University Director of Athletics Shane Lyons announced the schedule for the 2017-18 wrestling season on Wednesday.

The schedule consists of three open tournaments and 13 dual matches – six of which will take place at the WVU Coliseum. The Mountaineers will wrestle eight Big 12 duals, hosting three.

“We have a solid schedule that will challenge our young and veteran wrestlers to compete at a high level this season,” coach Sammie Henson said. “We have put in a lot of quality time this offseason and look forward to bringing our fans a type of aggressive wrestling they have been waiting for.”

Fans will get a sneak peek of the squad on Oct. 27 when the team hosts its Gold/Blue intra-squad match. The event will be held in the WVU Shell Building.

The Mountaineers open the season with a neutral-site Big 12 match against affiliate member Utah Valley in Clarion, Pennsylvania, on Nov. 3. WVU will remain in Clarion to compete in the Clarion Open two days later on Nov. 5.

The squad travels to St. Charles, Missouri, on Nov. 18 to compete in the Joe Parisi Open. It marks the second time in three seasons WVU will compete at the event, as they did so previously in the fall of 2015.

West Virginia opens its home slate on Saturday, Nov. 25, when Nebraska comes to the WVU Coliseum for a 2 p.m. match. The two met in Lincoln, Nebraska, in mid-November last season.

WVU heads to its final open tournament of the season the first week of December when the team travels to Las Vegas for the 36th Annual Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational. The event will be hosted at the Las Vegas Convention Center on Dec. 1-2. Senior Jacob A. Smith will look to produce his third straight top-10 finish at 197 pounds at the event.

Back-to-back rivalry matches highlight the December schedule. The Mountaineers will host the Pitt Panthers on Dec. 9 in a 2 p.m. match at the Coliseum. Though the Panthers claimed last season’s meeting in Pittsburgh, the Mountaineers have taken two of the last three duals. WVU then travels to Virginia Tech on Dec. 22 for a 7 p.m. match in Blacksburg, Virginia.

The Mountaineers start the new year with a pair of Big 12 home matches. Oklahoma comes to Morgantown on Jan. 4 for a 7 p.m. tilt, while WVU will welcome affiliate member North Dakota State to the Coliseum on Jan. 7 in a 7 p.m. dual.

WVU hits the road for the next four matches. The team will start the road swing by heading to Stillwater, Oklahoma, to face perennial national contender Oklahoma State on Jan. 19. After picking up their first-ever Big 12 dual win over Iowa State in Morgantown last season, the Mountaineers travel to Ames, Iowa, on Jan. 21. WVU opens the month of February in Colorado as the team heads to Big 12 affiliate Air Force Academy on Feb. 2. From there, the Mountaineers trek to Greeley to face Northern Colorado in a Big 12 dual on Feb. 3.

West Virginia returns to Morgantown to host South Dakota State in a league tilt on Feb. 11 at 2 p.m. inside the Coliseum. The team will make the trip to Edinboro, Pennsylvania, on Feb. 15 to face the Fighting Scots of Edinboro. The Mountaineers will then return to the Coliseum on Feb. 18 to cap the regular season when they host Clarion in a 2 p.m. match.

The Big 12 Championships will return to the BOK Center in Tulsa, Oklahoma, on March 3-4. The 2018 NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships will take place March 15-17 at Quicken Loans Arena in Cleveland, Ohio.
