No I did not even know we had a rugby team when I was in school 88-92. My son started playing during his freshman year, never knew one thing about it, and now he absolutely loves it. And, we truly enjoy watching the matches. I just wish MSU would dedicate the south Rec field to Rugby on Saturdays in the fall. We've been playing at Travis Outlaw park, for 2 seasons. It doesn't have the feel of being on campus.
I played for MSU early to mid 80's. I don't recall what the field we played on was called, but it was on-campus, and was lined by trees on one side. Was always available to us for games and practices. I don't think it was far from the football facilities because we'd occasionally get a few football players stopping by and watch our games. Some of them thought we were a little crazy.
I remember we lost one of our better players my senior season because he got an offer to play football at UK.
Yes, it's a great sport for playing, though confusing for spectators who don't understand the game. But once they do, it is a fun sport to watch as well, at least it is when you have good teams playing.
We got no support from the university other than the field we were allowed to use for all our practice & game dates. We literally had to get Michelob to sponsor us to pay for equipment, for which we had to wear black & yellow uniforms with the Michelob logo as our patch.
It sucked to not be able to wear the maroon & white, and sucked more because we had to wear USM colors. But we got free kegs of beer for our after-game parties as a consolation.
