SJ was dropping pinpoint pass after pinpoint pass in the NMSU game. I know the competition was weak. But even when a defender was draped all over a WR, he would still make pinpoint passes in that game. Had a 50+ yard bomb downfield with DB draped all over WR. And was still a perfect pass. Regardless of competition if player is draped by a DB and a perfect pass is delivered that shows ability. I believe he was suffering some confidence issues lingering from the Vandy game. I believe he fixes his throwing problems this off week and plays a great game vs MSU. He has shown the ability to make on a dime type passes. And he's HD a couple bad games. But he's shown the ability, he's young, and the bye week came at a perfect time for him to get his head where it needs to be and get back to throwing passes the way he did vs NMSU. He's missed a lot of open WR's lately which he never did vs NMSU. We just need him to hit the open man and make catchable passes
Only difference is, Johnson is actually fast. Newton was NEVER a dual threat QB. Honestly the only reason Newton was thought to be a dual threat was because he is African American. I hated that expectation for Newton because it wasn't fair. Johnson can run like a deer and if he can pass just enough to keep the defense honest........look out. Hinshaw and Gran have two very important weeks with Johnson to work on plays that'll suit Johnson's ability. Next two weeks are unbelieveably crucial for the path to six wins. It's a damn shame we didn't get that Southern Miss win, because I think the Cats would almost be a lock to get 6. I love the intensity that UK is playing with right now. I fully expect that same effort with a healthier lineup against Miss St. I think the crowd will be good, the stakes high, and Johnson will be more prepared.
the southern miss game will likely cost us a bowl. That game is basically the same game as the game vs vandy last season (a game we were a much better team in, worst coached game I've ever seen). The 3 straight runs up the middle out of shotgun at the one, nonetheless, is what likely costs us a bowl last season. But. I do like what the defense has done last 3.5 games. And miss state let auburn run all over them, with an RB I don't think is near the same level as Snell, he was like AU's 4th string RB. Could see that being a win.
Anyways, we do have a chance however, to beat a team we're not supposed to beat for the first time in Stoops career, and if we do so, it HELPS our bowl chances. Mizzou, MSU we have to win both, but if we split we MUST beat one of UT (least likely they kill us every year with dobbs), UGA, and UL. I could see us possibly beating UGA this year. If the QB plays awful and our defense is still playing well. We'll see. Would be awesome to beat MSU and Mizzou. If Johnson can get his mojo from the NMSU game back we might actually turn out to be a halfway decent team.... If the defense's keeps up what the defense has been doing.
I'll be honest, if we had a good passing QB, this team would have potential to be very good this season, assuming our defense hasn't been a fluke. The preseason expectations were that our only chance to wins was out score teams, but our defense is only reason we're 3-3. We have weapons all over the place on offense, a damn improved offensive line, great running backs, a solid TE, and a maybe pretty good defense. what I would do to have Mike Hartline on this exact team. He had nobody but Cobb to work with.
I feel like if this team had Hartline it'd be potential top 25. At the same time. QB play is everything. And no chance at all to win 6 without improved QB play, I think the potential is there with Johson given he threw the ball with pinpoint accuracy vs NMSU. I know bad team but when he had to throw it in tight window with defender draped all over WR he made the throw. Short, medium and deep in that game. It's crazy how much worse at throwing he's got since then. He's missing open players quite a bit. But I've seen him make throws I've NEVER seen Towles make. So I feel like there's a chance and bye week couldn't have come at better time. SJ needs to eat, sleep, and breathe throwing the football with accuracy right now. 24 hours a day, for week and a half straight. And get his mind back to where it was in that NMSU game.
