How many extremely talented players have used that organization as a stepping stone? It's one of the many, many reasons I prefer the NFL and NBA over MLB. Put a cap on that ****, already.

part of the Pirates problem is they don't make long term investements in players like Jason Bay, and they ship them off. This is a rare case for the Pirates.

Small market teams can compete in MLB, but just like everyone else, you have to do it right. That means drafting wisely and investing in your farm system, international scouting and developing players and it also means making shrewd decsions on players that can help you out, but won't break the bank.

There are numerous examples of small market teams having success in MLB every year- the Rays, the Brewers, and the Twins, and A's are all good examples.

All they did was buy out his Arbitration years with a multi year contract...
as the story said, they exchanged numbers for arbitration, and then decided to go ahead and offer a multi-year contract
which more than likely will save the club money in the long term, but provide insuarance to Paul.

After those 3 years, if he keeps doing what he is doing with no help he will really make the money in Free Agency
