To shut them mother 17er's up. One of those *** dicks last night in the GYM was running his mouth about how this is their 9th bowl in nine years. It's like they don't relise that they are Conference USA. The only thing I hate about playing them is driving their home attendence up. We should have made it a Home and Jackson deal.

LSU played Tulane in the Superdome a couple years ago, but they claimed something like 40% of the gate if I recall. It may have been more than that.

I heard the all the bitching and moaning around here for years. But, since Mullen came along it has quieted down some down here. It's time to spank that *** and do in front of a sell-out at their place and then again in Starkville. Then I can get to hear the excuses they dream up.

Damn, I wish it was next August. That 4 year wait is gonna be long.....

if you lose you make national headlines. Can`t any of you dumbasses see we have so little to gain and so much to lose by doing this.

On one hand, I don't see why we'd willingly help them out. But on the other hand, I'm not one to purposely hold people down, and we could seemingly gain some fans out of this deal by going down there and beating their ***. And in ours' and Ole Miss' position, they will always gloat about winning the CUSA until we beat them. So it may be necessary.

One bad thing is that by the time we play them, our program will likely be inthe dumps again.

He asked me what bowl they were in. When I told him they were in the Beef O'Brady's Bowl, he literally burst out laughing and accused me of kidding him.

It may not seem like much to you Northern Mississippi folks (people livingNorth ofa line from Meridian to Vicksburg) but we folks down here in the Southern part of the state have to live with the question year round..."why won't ya'll play us in football anymore?"

My wife, my brother, my sister-in-law, yes even my son, as well as about 75% of the people that I come in contact with each day either graduated from USM or went there. My sister-in-law's brother is especially vitriol about it.

I say let's play them and shut their pieholes.

if we had continued playing them we would have dominated thier asses in the 90's and even during the Croom years we would have won a few of them. If we had played them last year and this year we would havebeat downtheir asses. Why are you so scared of them? Hell we have lost to Conference USA before why are they so different? **** I am not scared to play them. We are far ahead of them in talent, coaching, drive, motivation, fan base, facilities and everything else you can think of. **** line up and whip that ***!

will probably be sidewalk State fans by the time we play Southern. That is, if we keep Mullen and/or keep winning.

he stop talking that smack about ten years ago. Both her brothers graduated from BYU and they don't talk smack. I have put them in their place. Basically I became a dick about it and pointed out all the bad things about their conference and their programs.

We are a small, poor state, and whatever dollars we can keep inside of our state's borders, the better.

We don't need any non-conference rivals. I'm not in favor of playing anybody more often than we playthe SEC East teams (twice every five years).

and just win, baby. I think we've only agreed to play them twice, right? We haven't signed up for a long term contract. Sack up and get motivated for those two games if that's what it takes. That's what the top programs around the country do. I heard Stricklin talking about us being the default team in the state for people who didn't go to college here. Say what you want about 'sidewalk alumni', but that's where you really start growing your fanbase. Like LSU, like Bama, like UT, in their respective states... Does anyone think Texas is scared to play North Texas? Does Florida shy away from playing UCF? I don't think so. If we say we want to be that program, we need to act like it and play this game. Knowing Stricklin and Mullen, I'm pretty sure that's why we scheduled it. It's a mental attitude that I want our players and coaches (and fans, I guess) to have.

I tell you what else I like about it. In a roundabout way, it makes UM look like scared little vaginas (and I'm assuming our AD is silently smiling about this). True story: I had a representative from USM in our office last week. We have a bunch of Ole Miss people in the office, but when he saw my MState helmet, he told the group "at least these guys aren't scared to play us." I loved it.

We ought to be the best team in the state on a yearly basis. I'm not saying we necessarily will be every year, but that's where our program needs to be -- we shouldn't have to worry about these two games against USM. Play the game. If we win, well, that's as it should be. If we lose, ****, get better.

This was a terrible decision by Byrne. I give him an overall grade of B because of this one deal. He had an A+ before he did this. Their AD has alreadly said that if you want tickets to that game in Hattiesburg, you will have to buy season tickets to get them. This is the biggest thing to happen to their football program in quite some time.

Yes we are now. We weren't back when we were playing them every year. So you really answered your own question.

Years ago Rick Cleveland wrote an article about what MSU and Ole Miss have that USM does not. And the big reveal was that we have each other. We have an opponent that the alumni are willing to open a checkbook and say "I'm gonna keep giving you money until we are better than those guys." When Ole Miss builds something we feel like we have to keep up, when we build something they feel the same way. We push each other to be better through our hatred.

USM has a winning record against us. At the time we were playing them every year I think you could argue that they had pretty comparable facilities, good coaching, and they were recruiting much better than they are now. So why the drop off? I think it is because Mississippi State and Ole Miss quit playing them. We took away the one thing that was driving them to get better. We took away the one game that their alumni would open up a checkbook and say "here is money, beat those bastards". We robbed them of the motivation we get by playing Ole Miss year in and year out. And because of that their program continues to drop.

We talk about their 10's of fans but you will see a TON of USM fans come to a game for the first time in years to watch them play MSU. Maybe they will have a good time and decide to keep coming. Maybe they will decide to give some money to the USM athletic program. Maybe a kid in the stands will grow up to be a good football player and decide to go to USM. Maybe none of that happens.

The one thing we know for absolute certainty is that if we ignore them they continue to become less and less of a factor. Playing them may mean nothing and it may not change anything. But I don't see why we take that risk. We don't need a win at USM, it is meaningless to us. But for USM that game will be their Super Bowl. A win against MSU will do more for that program than winning the CUSA multiple times. Even a loss helps them far more than the win helps us.

So to sum up, I don't want to play them because I think it is in Mississippi State's best interests to ignore USM. And I want what is best for MSU.

that there is nothing but negative returns for us in this? Sure, I feel good about it right now b/c we have a good coach, but what if we still had Croom? They would certainly whip our asses.I can ride my bicycle to the stadium, but for the betterment of the program, I will drive two or three extra hours to see us play. I give the bear's credit for understanding that the weaker their instate opponents are, the better off they are. Southern is in a bad state of affairs right now and we are going to pump alot of dollars into their budget with this game. If they beat us, recruits might not go to southern over us, but it might make them say "State lost to southern, they suck. I'm going to oxford or bama". Perception is reality.

I'm not reading all of these risks into it as much as the naysayers. I did not want to play them in the last decade, but now I have confidence in our program. We are much different now, for sure. That confidence tells me it's time to man up on not be afraid to play an in-state school. I think it's an exciting game that I look forward to much more than a UAB or Troy. Assuming we don't slide into the sewer between now and then, I think the timing is right for a 2 game series. Punk them and shut their soup coolers for another decade.

If you want to be the big dog for in-state recruits, you have to be the #1 in-state team. Winning is a positive. Sure, we may get our asses handed to us from time to time, but that is going to happen to anybody. This one game will not vault USM to elite status. A domed stadium and better conference might help.

Let me get this straight, your argument is that if MF'ing CROOM was still the coach, we would be worse, and under that scenario, they would beat us?

Really? That's what you're worried about?

First of all, let me say without hesitation that if MState somehow hired Croom back, I wouldn't care who you MF'ers played because I would have renounced my citizenship in Bulldog nation long before the game was played. Secondly, I have full confidence that even if Mullen left, the people we have in charge now are not as stupid as, oh, I don't know, YOU for example, and would never hire Croom back.

Side note -- wouldn't it be worse losing to the two schools you mention, since we do actually play those two teams head to head EVERY F'ING YEAR. Should we try to get out of those contracts too? I'm worried we're going to lose recruits to Bama if they happen to beat us.

Jesus, dude, really.

I just don't see it that way. As long as we are in the SEC and they are in C-USA, there won't be much they can do to close the gap between their program and ours, and that's just due to the ongoing commercialization of the sport. They will never be able to catch up because of the financial benefits we receive from being in the SEC. One loss to them certainly won't have much of a long-term impact, if any.

And why do we keep harping on losing to them? Like Meoff and some others said, beat them and none of it matters. I think it's good for the state and for our recruiting efforts on the AL-MS-LA coast area.

This whole we've got too much to lose and shouldn't play them is exactly the attitude Dan is trying to get the 17 rid of. Playing them for 2 consecutive years isn't going to make them enough money to resurect their program. Beat the crap out of 'em and move on and let them return to pissant c-USA. Beat them andole miss and we can put up billboards that say 'Mississippi State Champions' and we can all sit here and rub the rebs and both the usm fans noses in it.

Hell yes. After the 2nd game we'll have a 4-win streak against them, we'll be tied in series record (counting their two forfeit wins) and we'll be able to shut them the hell up for at least 10 years.

I am not scared of Southern Miss. At all. If we were to face them today we'd beat their asses. Y'all really think they are going to improve that much over the next few years? Y'all really think that we are going to regress that much over the next three years?

Remember this: 2007, we faced a UCF squad that beat them 34-17 and held that same team to 3 points. 3.

USM is a weak team in a weak conference. They are no threat and we will destroy them.

during that time we were only winning three games a year. I agree with Patdog it should not become a regular event but hell twice every ten years will be good. Win or lose it will not hurt Miss State. USM is in Conference USA with a 30,000 seat stadium that they can jam 15000 into on a good Saturday. They have nothing to offer but the New Orleans Bowl and St. Peter-burg bowl. Hell the best bowl they can offer is the Liberty bowl and then they play the eighth best team in the SEC and then I don't think they will play in that bowl game ever again. I mean damn this is the best team they have had in a while and still finished second in their division. They have absolutely nothing to offer recruits. Hell they use to be able to offer, "We are close to New Orleans". But **** since Katrina that has lost it's luster. They are a second rate team in a third rate conference. Bring those SOB's on!

if we didn't play them in any sport but in the South Football is king. The national record for a baseball game is less than 17,000 people. If we had that few for a football game we would be embarrassed. No one is going to open the wallet for baseball the way they do for football.
