“I’ve been asked, ‘Why didn’t you know about the rule?’” Smithers said. “Well, the handbook has about 160 pages in it, and I just was not aware of this particular rule, which is very penal. But we still feel this was the right decision.”

I don't know if I would admit to not reading the handbook because it is too long...

Hell, you don't even have to read the handbook. How about before you just cancel a season and forfeit a bunch of games, you just call someone at the MAIS office and let them know what you're planning to do.

If what the AD is saying is accurate, he was in a tight spot regardless of the rule.
Asking your 9 mostly 12-13 year olds and a couple of 7th graders to play basically every snap doesn't sound like a great idea to me, and it certainly wouldn't to the parents of a kid who gets hurt doing it.

The correct course of action is to let the state office know beforehand, of course, and they probably grant you a waiver to cancel the games. At the least, they would agree to let you play with running clock or something.

10-15 years ago wasn't PCS the place to go in H'burg? Their version of Jxn Prep? Have they fallen that far in a short time?

They're still apparently one of the 6 largest schools in the MAIS. Those figures are based on 9-12 attendance if I'm not mistaken so it could be the middle school is suffering. I'm only speculating here, someone more knowledgeable than I am can chime in and correct me.

My question is why didn’t the athletic director know the rules? Seems like that would be there job.

He probably should have known the rule, but the rule seems sort of strange to me. As others have said though, he should have informed the MAIS before just terminating the JV season. On the other hand, the MAIS had to know he was canceling the rest of the season and could have informed him of the consequences.

Enrollment I think has stayed mostly steady. It’s just that the football program imploded when Joey Hawkins left/was fired. It’s not as big as Prep or the other Jackson schools but a decent bit bigger than the other private school in Hattiesburg (Sacred Heart).
