....if LT had hired Jimbo Fisher instead of Sly. I know Jimbo was one of the front runner candidates back then. Thanks LT.

The Croom hire never made any sense to me. The man was a twice fired offensive coordinator who couldn't make his offense with Barry Sanders and LT thought this was the guy to fix our offensive woes....
On that same note though, it always amazes me how you can be freaking terrible as a head coach in professional sports and some other team will hire you as soon as you get fired.

Being fired as a coach in the NFL, especially as an assistant, really doesn't mean much. And good assistants are fired for bad reasons all of the time.

MSU fired Bruce Arians the current Arizona Cardinals head coach and former offensive coordinator for the Super Bowl champions Pittsburg Steelers.

Having said that, hiring Croom was an utter disaster, whether we should have known it ahead of time or not.

Far from certain he would do....

...at State what he did at FSU. Lots of other factors involved.

OF course he wouldn't have done at MSU what he did at FSU. But he damn sure would have done better than Croom did.

I think LT hired Croom so that the NCAA would back off hitting us so hard after Sherrill's alleged misdeeds.

That was the supposed reason. However, what penalties could have been worse than

being croomed? Just another ****-tastic search by LT. He did no work. He figured that Croom had finished #2 and that was good enough for him. No need to work or actually search out a good coach that would be the right fit. He could just pick up Bama's droppings... And that is exactly what we got. A crap coach that tried all he could to make us be his alma mater and one of our hated rivals. I still hate Croom for not being a big enough man to admit that he wasn't the right person for the job. To be a person that professes such 'faith', he sure doesn't back it up. Especially while accepting money for a job he did not do...

All probably true....and the fact is that Crooms never had a chance of being selected as head corch at Alabama...racism was involved in it and Crooms always had his feelings hurt because he didn't get it and too stupid to realize it was racism. We gave him a job and he always acted as if he was "better" than State...what a jerk

Jimbo withdrew his name during the search, did he not? I was still in school during this time some my memory is not exactly reliable. I would swear that I remember him taking his name out of the conversation in some semi-official manner.

How do you know it was racism? It is conceivable that they interviewed him and said "this guy is an idiot", because he definitely was when it came to coaching football. I know Shula wasn't a home run hire for Bama, but the guy looks like Vince Lombardi compared to Sly.

Sarcasm?

I always resented Croom for playing the race card by continually insisting there was no race card, all the while bringing up race every chance he got. Meanwhile Franklin and Sumlin just show up and coach... Something Croom forgot to do. This is the reason I almost barfed during his SEC documentary, not because he was a horrible coach who got a documentary... Just that 5 years later he's still bringing race into something no one was concerned with race to begin with.
