College football fans like to assume Vandy will always hold down the
SEC basement, but the school has the money to purchase a down-the-road
SEC Championship if it really wants to. With a $2 billion endowment
that's bigger than any two other SEC schools combined, the only question
is whether it's willing to invest in its athletic department or not.

Making a legit offer to a legit SEC coaching prospect would be a sign
Vandy suddenly cares about football. It's not like Nashville can't be a
good college football town if the program suddenly takes itself
seriously.

Malzahn turned Auburn's offense from one of the nation's worst into
one of its best in only two years, though it's hard to say how much of
that is due to Cam Newton. If Malzahn can put points on the board at
Tulsa, as he did at a record-setting pace, he could do it at Vandy. If
the school is actually all-in, of course. And Malzahn would want to be
assured of that before signing.

They must of told him something gooooood.....

The rats are running for their lives. I can think of 20 options available to Malzahn that make more career sense than vandy.
this more than anything else I have seen tells me that Auburn is in trouble. I don't care how good the money is, Malzhan was going to get offered a pretty big job at some point. Why jump at Vandy unless you see next year at Auburn being a place you would rather not be. Then again, $3 million is a lot of jack....

It should be interesting to watchtheir house of cards crumble down next season. If the NCAA/FBI investigation starts to really produce fruit, then there will be more rats jumping off the sinking ship. Chizit (sp?) just looks like a perfect "fall guy" to me.

Similar to the SMU staff leaving, andbeing replaced with hand puppet Collins.

At least he looks more like a nerd than the last guy that they had that talked about working in a turkey processing plant. He has that going for him.

To those wondering why he would take this job, it makes sense to me- SEC school, 3 million dollars a year, you win there, you can be a hero. If you don't, so what? No one else has either since the 1910's. And you still get 3 million dollars. What are their expectations there? Win six games? Go to the Music City Bowl? Seems doable.

Will he attract talent, or more specifically offensive talent? I think he will. It seems like a fun offense to play in, and it's an SEC school. Just hiring Mahlzahn will improve their offense without making any personnel changes. He's good.

Should Ole Miss be scared? Since they have to play them and couldn't beat them before, yes. And I think UT is going to have to at least take them seriously now, too. If they bring in a decent QB, they could certainly pull off an upset.

Now, as much as I think Auburn is about to get slammed, I don't think that has anything to do with this decision by Gus. Mahlzahn is about as attractive as he can get right now. Auburn is going to lose a lot of talent next year- I do think that has a lot to do with the decision.

to take the paint off of the steps in their stadium. That was pretty slick- especially since it rained the day we were at that game.

He is very good at gimmick offenses that are sustainable (core of the offense...not just a fake punt). While he was the offensive coordinator at Tulsa, TU had the no. 1 offense in the nation two years in a row. Just prior to that, at Arkansas, Nutt had him tied up. When asked why he was immediately successful at TU after UPig, he said something to the tune of: "Two things. I get to do my job (implying Nutt rarely let him play call) and we have players smart enough to understand a complex offense."

In Oklahoma and surrounding states, TU is thought of as the Vandy of the area...the smart school. He may actually be able to do well with his true offense. I've seen it at TU and always wondered if it would work against SEC defenses. Trust me when I say that some of those plays were just awesome.

Apparently he is now going to turn down vandy as of a report out of the new home of the ncaa's investigation staff. So apparently he thinks he has better options.

I don't think he has any others right now. Might he later? Maybe. But as of now he is not a legit candidate for any other HC openings that I know of. I don't think he he interviewed for any. I don't need to ask him. I am pretty sure he is not interested in Temple.

He had to consider Vandy because of that very fact. He certainly has to understand that without Cam (even if the NCAA does nothing) he will lose luster. I suppose he could move to another OC job (Texas or UF) and try to build from there away from the problems at AU, but otherwise I see no other great options. Throw in that they are offering him a competitive salary and it is tough to say no.

I wasn't limiting his options to "right now." I'm saying he has other options that are better than Vandy, even though Vandy may be the only one available to him "right now." Obviously, he is reconsidering Vandy as a viable option. And I think he is wise to do so.

that he may lose a lot of luster in the coming years. now, if he wants to move to another big time program as OC, I might see the reasoning, but I think he could be better served making some coin while getting his feet wet at Vandy. Not exactly a place you will get tossed on your head with a 4 win season. Win 6 and move on.

I have to think that if he is re-considering it is because he has been approached by UT or UF about OC position. Maybe not.

Seriously, I have no idea. If he was considering other options, even remotely, would he accept more money to stay at AU or would he just stand pat?

So there's nothing to put an asterisk on, dipshit. Of course, we know our place as one of the two retard programs in the SECW. You slimy MFers, on the other hand, are a national disgrace. Let's take roll right quick, ******. Raise your hand if you are an athletic support of an institution of higher learning that has been under formal investigation with an eye toward probation by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. OK, I see your hands, Auburn fans. Anyone else? Anyone?

Doesn't the Plainsmen, Tigers, War Eagles, or what ever the <17> they are called, lead the NCAA on the number of times being on probation? I have always heard they are numero ono in this category. Can you somehow verify?

The distinction for most probation worthy NCAA infractions by member institutions goes to those highly distinguished programs, Southern Methodist University and Arizona State University, each of whom has received the NCAA red hot poker 8 times. Not to be outdone, however, the boogs are right there in the #2 slot at 7 NCAA bufus. But it's just a matter of time before the fambluh goes all in with #8 to reach that honored #1 slot.

Hey State guys, not here to call you names and be an arse on your board, but I did want to make a few comments about this thread.

1) Obviously Malzahn is staying, the first thing that tells you is how wrong some of these reports can be that hit the radio waves, online news outlets, and message boards. "Credible" sources reported Malzahn had accepted the Vandy job and even listed a salary...and they were wrong. Shouldn't this be considered in the light of all of the allegations we've heard about Cam.

2) The NCAA is not, and has not started an investigation of Auburn University. Auburn has not received a letter of inquiry from the NCAA regarding Cam's recruitment. They did however review financial records of the entire Newton family, and checked phone records from Kenny Rogers, and the entire Newton family and found no ties to Auburn. The NCAA investigation involved specifically the recruitment of Cam Newton as Miss State. By all accounts based on the comments from the NCAA the investigation into Cam's eligibility is a closed issue...unless of course new information comes to light...but that is the case with ANY student athlete. As I understand it, there are still parts of the NCAA investigation ongoing, but those specifically have to do with actions taken by Miss State boosters.

3) The FBI's role has been completely miss-represented in all of this. So many people jumped on this FBI bandwagon assuming or "hoping" the absolute worst for Auburn. First of all, the FBI investigation into some of Auburn's boosters was ongoing before Cam ever came into the picture, and had nothing to do with him or player recruitment, or even money given to the athletic department. It had and has to do with money being used to affect political campaigns and issues. A completely separate investigation with the FBI had to do with Kenny Rogers and the issue of whether or not there was a ring of agents shopping college athletes to schools. This investigation has a closer tie to the Newton recruitment, but was not specific to Cam, it was specific to Rogers, and to some extent Ian Grossman, a known NFL agent. I don't know the status of this investigation, but obviously the FBI has no concerns about player eligibility, or even NCAA violations committed by universities, they have separate interests. The FBI was basically looking at this as "human trafficking"(selling kids).

4) Amazing to see how many people on this board thought that Malzahn was leaving to "jump ship before Auburn goes down in flames." That is obviously wishful thinking as no facts point to Auburn doing anything wrong. For the objective State fans here, this should serve as greater confirmation that Auburn has not committed any illegal recruiting or other NCAA violations. If they had, Gus and a number of other coaches for that matter, would have taken the first boat out of Auburn...and that $15M over 5 years that Vandy was offering would have never even been offered because Gus would have taken $1.4M a year and said "SOLD!"

Now I just made a big deal about being objective. If I am going to practice what I preach, I will have to admit that I, like all of you carry my team bias with me. Had Alabama landed Cam when we thought we were going to, and all of these allegations came out, I would probably be one of the first to assume that they must have paid Cam and they are all a bunch of rats. I would hope that after the facts came out I would put my bias aside and live with the facts of the investigation, but its hard to say...because I really hate Alabama :)

Anyway, I just wanted to throw that out there for you guys. I have stayed on top of the Cam issue from the beginning, and can honestly say that I really and truly believe Cam, and believe that Auburn has done nothing wrong. Cecil made a big mess and put a cloud over his son, and for that he will have to live with what he tried to do. In the end, all of the details will come to light, and I feel comfortable that I won't have to come back here and eat any crow for what I have said.

Good luck on your bowl and beat down Michigan. WAR EAGLE!

So you are okay with a father meddling with his son's recruitment, soliciting hundreds of thousands of dollars, and having the son being cleared for amateur athletics because he had nothing to do with it? And if you are, do you think the rest of the amateur athletics world is as well and why? Don't comment on whether or not you think your school is an angel in all this and that Auburn did nothing wrong - I already know your answer. I just want to know your opinion on that scenario.

You guys are funny. It is sad though that you have bought into all the bammer conspiracy theories. You would think at this point rational people could see the light. Hell, even Joe Shat has said the investigation is over.

As for Malzhan, he is a great coach and I expect him to take a position after next year, but I am glad he turned down Vandy. That would have been career suicide, but he used that to leverage a raise out of AU. Good for him. Vandy will never get a top notch coach until they make a commitment to their athletic programs. They need to spend more time building better facilities, then worry about high dollar coaches. Anyway, good luck in your bowl game, I for one hope you guys win. The SECw will be strong for years to come.

One of the guys from our board posted a link to this thread, I thought it was interesting to see everyone say "Ah hah! I have a question for you.... What do you think about the interview with Bowden where he spilt the beans on Auburn and Lowder??? That was not too many years ago, do you honestly believe it really has changed? I know that proof is a bit lacking right now but you must have a small feeling in your gut that tells you "oh my I hope we don't get caught". I admire your kindness on our board but your dubmassery is even more desireable. Do you really think Cam just all the sudden out of nowhere decided he wanted to go to Auburn? I know that most people at auburn and alabama think Starkville is just horrible and state is little ole nothing, but sometimes on occasion people like it here and wouldn't trade it for anything. Do you think its just a coincidence that Auburn has the most amazing recruiting class after an 8-5 season with a mediocre head coach with nothing to offer recruits? You do us a favor and stay on top of this Cam situatuion for us and then come back after the conference makes their money off your game and the tv people have pocketed all their cash. Then we will see what all happens. Stay Delusional Auburn!
