Mangum was born 40 years too late. Would have been a heck of a MLB player in the 70’s and 80’s. Now it’s all about Power

Its actually all about both - getting on base AND power, which is why OPS is, by far, the most important measure of offensive value.

Fortunately for Jake, the Rays outfield currently doesn’t have much of either one, and his OPS in the spring has been among the best of everyone on the roster (at all positions) which includes multiple MLB veterans.

I know all the strikes against him, but I sure hope he gets his fair shot this year. He has risen to the challenge at every new level he gets to. Deserves this chance.

And I can't imagine there are many better guys to have in your clubhouse.

Hope he gets a chance to play in the Bigs for several years. He is the type of player that could lead as a HC one day I think. Has a lot going for him and is still very young!

7 players hit over .300 in MLB last year...7. The league is all about power now. Magnum is a prototype lead off hitter but they put him 9th in the batting order.

They have zero interest in him making the roster.

I hope they cut some of these veteran players that hit <.200 last year that are sucking it up in Spring Training and he slides into a spot.

Don't they kind of look at the 9th place guy as a set the table spot for the mashers at the top now?

Wishful thinking by me?

Well, then I guess it’s a good thing that JM currently has a higher slugging % in Spring Training than every single one of the Rays regulars from last season….except 2B Brandon Lowe.

Guys currently below him include the biggest masher on the whole organization - 3B Junior Caminero who has 3 HR’s in the Spring - as well as all 3 of the projected starting outfielders on opening day (Lowe, DeLuca, Morel).

Mangum - .591
Caminero - .571
Josh Lowe - .333
Chris Morel - .231
Jonny DeLuca - .185

Again, the Rays are really, really subpar in the outfield. Maybe the worst in all of MLB. There is certainly opportunity for anyone to emerge over the incumbents

Read previous posts. The old lead-off guys are the 9-hole hitters in today’s game.

Pretty ridiculous. He’s on the 40-man roster, tied for the most games played in the spring with 2 others (13 games), and still drawing starts 75% of the way through the camp. They certainly are looking very hard at him. He will make it, or be the last 1-2 cuts.

On that we agree.

I follow the Rays, they have 1 roster position open for opening day. He won't be the 1. It sucks as a Rays and Mangum fan but it's a fact.

That may or may not be true. But regardless, the reasons you give for him ā€œnot being the 1ā€ don’t hold water.

I’m standing by the fact that he either makes it, or he’s the last 1-2 cuts. Feel free to say who is actually going to make it over him.

There's no good reason he shouldn't make the opening day roster. He should. But my guess is he won't. Welcome to analytics ball. It sucks.

Craziness.

What’s most ridiculous though is that the shift to the ā€œanalytics-ballā€ offensively hasn’t actually improved scoring at all. Runs per game are actually way down.

The past 3 seasons should have easily been the highest ever league wide runs-per-game averages in MLB history, with the adoption of the DH in the NL since 2022. Instead, the run totals the past 3 years don’t even match the numbers of the early 2000’s, which was way after the steroid era and way before analytics ever took off. The analytics push towards power / slugging / walks and away from batting average has just provided a different way to skin the cat, but it hasn’t proven to be any better.

Heck, I could have told them that. When you hit .220 it doesn't matter how many home runs you hit, they'll only score 1 run at a time. Boring baseball.
