Yes, he’s been playing less since Simpson got called up. He’s also not been hitting well the last few weeks. He’s still probably playing 60% of the time but pre-Simpson it was 80-90%

Kind of hurt my spirit not to see him in tonight against my Most Hated Team … Rays trying to come back.

Deluca is also back from the IL, more people to share the OF with. Last night appears to have been a rest day for both Simpson and Mangum though.

DeLuca hit .217 with a .609 OPS last year. 0.6 WAR in over 100 games. It’s not very likely that he’s going to be the guy to take AB’s away from Jake or Simpson over the long haul.

They also sent Misner down a month ago when they called Simpson back up, and Palacios is still out, so its really not any more crowded than it was right after Josh Lowe got back. Morel has been awful for all of 2025, and I think you’ll see him get traded, demoted, or just generally phased out…..which will also reduce the log jam. Between Lowe, Mangum, Simpson, and DeLuca, I’d expect 3 of 4 to start most every game moving forward. Depends on the matchups.

Tampa is also selling at the deadline. Lowe in particular has been linked with a few teams at this point.

Certainly makes sense to sell Lowe, given his recent injury history, lack of standout performance vs. the other 3 primary outfielders, and the emergence of Aranda as a major offensive threat. He’s also coming up on arbitration, so I think they’d probably rather just cut bait and get some more young talent in the OF.

MLB batting average is .239, near record low. Jake is batting .295.

No one stealing pitches anymore other than when the pitcher gives it away with body language

Batting average is not very important.

Jake's OPS is .698 and his OPS+ is 94. Both are below league average.

Simpson is .681 and Caballero is .643 and Jake has better slugging % than both as well as a very decent top 40 base stealing %. It really comes down to hot streaks for the mid tier guys, which ebbs and flows throughout the season.

Jake, Simpson and Cabellero won't slug well but getting a single is almost like a double for them.

And then looking at RISP, Jake was leading the MLB in June. He hits much better against right handers and he has slumped a little in the last 2 weeks.

Cash monkeys with the lineup like a Vegas addict and its not gone that well lately in my humble opinion.

Lowe is at .700 / 95
Simpson at .681 / 92
Morel at .655 / 82
Caballero at .643 / 82
Misner (before demotion) was at .618 / NA

DeLuca has some decent numbers, but only like 30 AB’s. His career sample size suggests that will not continue.

So, below league average or not, Jake is either the best or 2nd best outfielder on the squad…..depending on when you check the stats. There’s a small drop-off to Simpson, then a huge drop off to everybody else. Jake should be playing every day….even if he doesn’t always start.

This is off subject, but kinda on considering that Ichiro is maybe the ultimate example of the kind of ballplayer Jake tries to be.

Went down a shallow Ichiro rabbit hole with his recent HOF induction. It is just incredible to me that the guy started his MLB career at the age of 27 and still reached 3,000 hits. What a hitting machine he was

It’s true, but they’ve play Simpson more than they played Misner toward the end, which has resulted in fewer games for Jake. Agree that Morel generally sucks and that DeLuca hasn’t done much. Simpson is also a bad defender at this point but new to the position. Even with the slump, Jake is probably the solid #2 behind Lowe

The writer should lose his voting rights.
He should, but there is obviously some kinda ego thing going on with some voters through the years.

How else can you explain Ichiro possibly being the first position player to be a unanimous first ballot HOFer when players like Musial and Aaron and Mays and Mantle and even Randy Johnson and quite a few other obvious ones came before.

Caballero just got traded and Simpson got injured yesterday, looks like Mangum will be back in the lineup for a bit.
Caballero was not only traded, but was traded MID-GAME, to the other team the Rays were playing. Started the game in one dugout and finished it in the other. Kind of wild.
