(Let me start off by saying this is long and just something I was thinking about after watching a movie and not being able to sleep.)
I was just thinking about how far mankind has advanced in a relatively short time. I believe early modern man showed up about 200,000 years ago, but we didn't really start making huge strides until about 10,000 years ago. I believe that is when agriculture took off and human civilizations started shortly after. So pretty much in only 5% of our existence as a species we've created things like agriculture, domestication of animals, writing, government, fabrication with metals, medicine, science, industry, religion, technology, advanced forms of travel, and space flight to name a handful off the top of my head. Most of that probably took place in the last 5,000 years.
Let's say someone visited us around 2,950 BC when the pyramids were being built.
There are people that believe those beings might be responsible for the construction of the pyramids. So after seeing where we are as a civilization, they leave and go back to their home world. If they were to come back 5,000 years later (in about 33 years), do you think they would be impressed with how far we have come in that time?
We've come a long way, but where would we be if not for all of the wars throughout history that were fought over things like religion, territory, trade routes, and politics? Would we have worked together to solve problems and speed up our advancements without it? Possibly, but then look at how fast technology increased due to those wars. Communication, shipping, travel, medicine, entertainment, energy, computers, and space flight are all things that have advanced from war and because of that war is probably a necessary evil.
So what do you all think about where we are today compared to a few thousand years ago? Do you think we are behind or ahead of schedule or about right where we should be? I just wish space travel had advanced more in my lifetime. I always said that before I die I would like to travel to space. Unless I win the Powerball, I don't see that happening.
My long rambling post is officially over. Maybe I can fall back to sleep now.
