Part of our ability to hold Michigan scoreless for the final 3 quarters of the Gator Bowl is due to his skills and ability to make in-game adjustments. Held Auburn to a season low in points. Held Florida to 7 on their home field. He's as much a part of our success as Mullen is.

from a Texas. Figured it would take at least another year or two for a Top 5 program to come calling for him. He's only removed from MTSU one year. He will get a big raise from us but if Texas really wants him not much we can do.

While we can pay Mullen a top 15 salary, the big boys can shell out lots for good assistants. They can pay Diaz (and other assistants) into the upper 6 figures if they want and we pretty much cannot. Now if he goes to Texas for $400k, then maybe we overextended on Mullen's contract and may have trouble getting a good replacement. I'm curious as to who would be a good replacement. Diaz's name was coming up here even before Hot Carl was gone.

It all started with his house going up for sale a few weeks ago. He said it was to get closer to town, but my sources didn't buy it.

I have always heard the problem that Diaz has is with the "Co-Defensive Coordinator" title. It really limits his ability to get raises from MSU, because Wilson is just as entitled (at least on paper). We'll see how things turn out, but if Texas offers there probably won't be much we can do. However, I keep hearing that MSU Athletics is about to get a LARGE donation and our assistant coaches will benefit greatly from it. Hopefully we can have some extra $ if Texas ends up offering Diaz. A BDJ post says there is a poster on a UT website (orangebloods) saying the same thing "MSU has a T Boone Pickens type donation coming, so things might not be so easy for us."

I'll let ya know if/when I talk to my source on the subject again.

Alabama started the head coaching inflation when they hired Saban for nearly twice as much as the next highest paid SEC coach.

I blame UT and Kiffin for really getting the ball rolling on the assistant business. They were paying Orgeron $900K to be recruiting coordinator, and Monte was making $1.2M. I want to say Auburn re-signed Malzahn for $1.3M.

The head coach can do a lot, but the biggest thing he has to be able to do is hire assistants. No coach can do it all, so the head coach has to be almost as good at hiring assistants as an AD has to be at finding a good head coach. Your defense was a huge part of your success this fall. If Diaz is that good, he's going to eventually get hired away either for another DC job paying more or a head coaching gig, so Mullen's job is going to be making sure he finds the next good coordinator.

I always point to Tuberville at Auburn. He did a pretty good job of withstanding staff attrition and finding assistants. He had Petrino, Muschamp, and Chizik as coordinators on his staff at Auburn at different times, just to name a few, and he kept replacing them with quality coaches, up until he was pushed to hire the one OC at the end of his time at Auburn, and that one ended up costing him his job.

When a program starts firing assistants after a bad season...that means the fuse is short for the next coaches coming in.
When going to a job like that, if things don't go well the next year, you are toast.
This is not like going into a new happy coaching enviroment, and Tx has the coins to dump all of them.

So what position does this put Mullen in to have Wilson hanging out here?Hewouldn'tpromote him to full timeDC would he? I hope Mullen would be able to find another guy who thinks out side the box as well as Diaz does.

arrogant and acting like he invented the sport.....I don't see Wilson as a good idea at DC I like finding a proven guy at a smaller school. Much like what Texas is trying to do. It just works better that way.

Have a lot of relatives who are UT alums and they all tell me if Mack Brown doesn't win 9 or 10 games next year then he is gone. Now granted that shouldn't be a problem there but if that were to happen then Manny would be stuck in no mans land the following year.

The sliver lining if he leaves would have to mean he's pretty confident Mullen wants to stick around here for awhile. He'd be a prime candidate to be our next HC should Mullen leave.

If he's not getting a big bump to go to UT (not likely - I'm sure their money will be huge for DC standards), I'd stick around here and enjoy job stability until a HC spot opens up...

this is the price of success. I'd much rather has assistants that were coveted by others than have those that we don't want and can't get rid of.

All that being said coming off 5-7 and Mullen leaving rumors we got Manny. Albeit from MTSU.

Coming off 9-5, most everybody back and Mullen locked in to a degree, we will do fine finding a replacement. Mullen has experienced Torbush and Diaz. He knows what to look for.

Besides, we now pay Mullen on average 2.65 to handle things such as this.

are interested in our coaches than that no one is. Mullen has done a very good job of hiring assistants (except for the Torbush fiasco). If Diaz leaves, I've got confidence in Mullen that he can find a good replacement.

Of course it will be a huge pay raise for him, it's Texas. It also has to do with the fact that Texas' past 2 DC's are now head coaches in the SEC. The DC position at Texas is just a lot more prestigious than the DC position at State. Again, it's Texas; they're a top 5 program in the country.

While I would understand why Manny would leave if offered the DC position at Texas, if I were him, I'd think long and hard before jumping to the Big 12. That conference is a trap for a young DC that plays the style of defense that he likes to run because they don't really play defense in that conference. It will be a shootout each week and his seat would stay very warm at a place that would fire the HC for not winning 9-10 games each year.

I was just thinking of the low-chance scenario they didn't offer him massive amounts of money being a young coordinator. You could probably make a case for him to stay if they didn't give him a huge raise - mainly around the positive of stability in Starkville should you have a bad season or two. But then again, as you pointed out, their DCs routinely go on to bigger and better things, so in theory, you could logic going there for less money if you knew you'd end up a BCS HC in no less than 5 years.

Best of luck to him if he wants to go - I couldn't blame him for leaving. I just hope he doesn't take our best recruits with him and remembers us if/when Mullen ever decides to leave...

So your saying texas and other schools in the Big 12 don't play sound defense. I agree with that but wouldn't that make it even more desirable to have someone like Diaz who may can change the way texas plays defense. I mean in all honesty I dot want him to go but I couldn't get mad if he did go. I sure as hell don't blame texas for considering him. I'm pretty sure mullen will make a good hire to replace him.
