From combined reports FLORENCE - University of North Alabama head football coach Mark Hudspeth has announced his resignation from the school after seven seasons and 66 wins with the Lions. The Birmingham News reported Saturday night that Hudspeth will join Dan Mullen's staff at Mississippi State University.

A former offensive coordinator at the U.S. Naval Academy and at his alma mater, Delta State, Hudspeth will be Mullen's passing game coordinator. 

 

 "I am very thankful to the University of North Alabama for giving me the opportunity to coach at such an outstanding place and to be part of such an outstanding tradition," Hudspeth said. "We worked awfully hard to uphold the high standards at UNA and feel like we have left the program in good shape. "I want to thank all the young men who have put in so many hours of work and dedication to make the UNA program successful. I also want to thank the campus and community for its outstanding support and I'm going to miss everyone at UNA and the Shoals area. "I wish nothing but the best for UNA and its football program in the future." 

 Hudspeth became the seventh head fooball coach in UNA history in December of 2001 and has led the Lions to a 66-21 record over the last seven years. Included in that run is two Gulf South Conference Championships (2003 and 2007) and five NCAA playoff appearances (2003, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008). He led UNA to a 12-2 record this season and to the semifinals of the NCAA Division II playoffs. The Lions have a current streak of four straight seasons with 10 wins or more and four straight playoff appearances. "There is no question that Mark Hudspeth will be missed," said UNA President Dr. William Cale. "He has built upon our strong tradition and recruited excellent student athletes who impress us both with their talent and their academic success." "Because our program is nationally competitive I would expect that we will attract an outstanding group of candidates who are interested in being the next head football coach at UNA."
 UNA Athletic Director Mark Linder echoed those sentiments. "We appreciate the job that Coach Hudspeth has done here at UNA and the success that he has brought to our University," Linder said. "Coach Hudspeth is leaving us with a firm foundation and we wish him the best."
