McGwire actually works with some of the Cardinals players in the offseason on hitting, and he's familiar with many of them. LaRussa still thinks very highly of him as well, and add the fact that McGwire is already on the payroll as a spring training instructor, and there you go. Also, at one time, McGwire wanted to get into managing, but I don't know how he would do in that role.

does this seem like a terrible idea? I don't know whether he'll be a good coach or not, but it just seems like a PR nightmare. I also think, at least initially, there are going to be a lot of questions surrounding his Congress testimony since this will be the first time he's truly been back in the limelight since then. He's gonna have to face the questions eventually I think, and I think that him facing those as part of a coaching staff is not a good idea on the organizational front. I think its good for McGwire to face the questions with the organization's backing, but I don't think the Cardinals are putting themselves in a very good position. I may be wrong, but this just seems like it could be quite a circus in spring training and the early part of the season which I don't think is ever a good thing.

It's interesting how he doesn't catch as much flak from using steroids as Barry Bonds, Sammy Sosa or Raffy does.

That's because he really didn't do it.

Seriously....

No...really.

...isn't so much the steroid thing, as it is his ability to teach hitting. Mark McGwire was a power, dead-pull hitter who didn't always hit for a high average. I would think you would want someone in that position with a more scientific approach to hitting.

I love Mark McGwire as much as the next guy, but this is a questionable decision.

I am going to neither buy or sell right now. On a baseball front, I think its a good move. Mac knows hitting and seems to do a good job of teaching it. On a publicity front, I think the media backlash will be huge. He and the Cardinals will be asked questions numerous times that they dont want to answer or could look bad answering.

That aside, I have always been a huge Mac fan and remember the day he was traded to the Cardinals in 97 like it was this past summer along with following the chase. Maybe it will all work out.

Wonder if this will follow? When he retired the Cards had the scultor that sculpted Stan, Lou, Bob and the others statues to do one for Mcgwire, After the scandal they had it stored, but not trashed. If this goes well, in a year or two does it find its way outside the stadium?</p>

I don't disagree with that. I think its a questionable hire on the baseball side as well, and I think they definitely could have found someone better. I just think the steroids/non-baseball part of the hire is a bigger deal and gonna be a bigger mess for the Cardinals, at least initially.

Big Mac wasn't a dead pull hitter- it was not unusual for him to hit opposite field home runs.

Teaching hitting and being able to actually hit are two totally different things and aren't mutually exclusive.

Now, that said if I had a choice to hire a hitting coach it would be Rudy Jaramillo, not Mark McGwire.

At the same time, I don't think Big Mac would be that bad. I'm more concerned about his lack of coaching experience than anything else.

I think that's unavoidable, and it could very well be a distraction. He'll more than likely just say that he isn't going to answer questions about steroids and let that be the end of it.

As far as PR in terms of the Cardinals fans, I think it will be a popular decision. Big Mac still has a stretch of I-70 named after him, Big Mac land has moved into Busch Stadium III, and he is still popular there. You still see McGwire jersey's and t-shirts around.

that he has lost a ton of HOF votes because of the steroid scandal, and he is frequently brought up anytime someone like Manny or A-Rod get caught.

has nothing to do with going with a pitch and taking it to the opposite field.

Now, for most people it's a double or a single, but the concept is the same.

I say huzzah to you Mr. McGwire. All these guys need is a swift shot in the ***, and you're just the guy to give it to them.
