Baby Gronk will be in Maroon and Gold.......not burgundy and gold..........

Purple and dark red are mixed to create Maroon. Maroon (US & UK /məˈruːn/ mə-ROON, Australia /məˈroʊn/ mə-RONE) is a dark brownish red which takes its name from the French word marron, or chestnut. The Oxford English Dictionary describes it as "a brownish crimson or claret color."

sorry to be so picky.......

Which of the Jesuit schools really wears maroon and gold?

Great question,

It is my understanding that many Jesuit educational institutions claim maroon and gold as their colors because those colors may be found in the Loyola family coat of arms.

Ignatius Loyola came from a noble family of Basque origin. One side of the family was particularly loyal to the royal family, and the red/maroon and gold diagonal stripes represent blood shed for the royal family. The wolf (lobo in Spanish) and the pot (olla in Spanish, pronounced OYA) is supposed to represent both the Loyola (lobo & olla = Loyola) side of the family and the fact that the family provided so well for its soldiers that even wolves were able to find something to eat from the leftovers in the pot.

For those of you Rambler alumni out there who remember Father Beall, I recall him explaining the meaning during the summer school in Spain program that he used to run back in the 70s. We visited Loyola's family home/birthplace on that trip.

With respect to which school has the real maroon and gold, I'll leave that to others. In my opinion, though, LA's concept of maroon and gold more closely matches the colors in the coat of arms than does SICP's concept. Especially the gold.

When I was at LA in the late '70s the football team wore helmets and pants the same color as the current Ignatius team. Not sure when the went to the yellow gold.

My son now plays at Ignatius and like the gold of SI better.

I was away at college in the late 70s, so I didn't witness that temporary color scheme insanity at LA.. When I was a Rambler, the colors were as they are now....and have been for a very long time.

Under Powers, they wore this:

Either under Schachner ('76-'78) or Harrington ('79-'86), they switched to this:

Then Hoerster brought this:

I remember those Powers era helmets with the stylized LA logo. Never liked 'em. Trying to remember if the Spoo teams had them as well. I think not. That logo was introduced during my time there as a student.

I will say that when we played SI, (Provi), I was a little impressed and curious about the shiny gold/chrome helmets.

To continue this stupid thread:
From LA
OFFICIAL SCHOOL COLORS are maroon and gold. The school logo, school seal and athletic logo are reproduced in PMS 142 yellow and PMS 229 maroon for print or PMS 5115 maroon for computer display. For the school seal, the appropriate maroon with PMS 874 gold is reserved for formal or ceremonial purposes. When only one color is possible, the logo and the seal may be reproduced in maroon, yellow, black or gold.
