Mississippi State Woooooo! Damn Right!

I just sat down to watch the replay via DVR and I dont give a **** if you like this cheer or not, but someone needs to sloooooow the student section down a bit. Why the 17 are they rushing this chant? Its not a 17ing race... It has a rhythm. Dont they practice this stuff before the first kick-off?

I noticed the same thing. It's like they are trying to win the chant.

I honestly think it's the acoustics of the field. There is no way they are that far off. Even on "Go State" - they are ahead.

This has been the case for at least the past 10 yrs. And it pisses me the hell off. There is a one-beat pause between "fight fight fight" and the subsequent "Mississippi State..." that some people just skip. There should be some sort of mandatory training for Freshmen.

It's been that way since last year. I don't understand how they can keep up with "Hey! Go State!" and stay in rhythm but as soon as "maroon, white" starts it goes to ****... if you can't hear the band to keep pace, watch the damn cheerleaders. They even have different colored pom poms waving when we say "Maron" , "Whit" ... I just gave up on trying to do it because they are so damn fast.

I hate this too, and it isn't just the acoustics of the stadium, they do it at the basketball game as well. It's embarrassing, and I've basically just quit participating in that chant.

This can't be it DS. I am in section F, right at the F/G tunnel. I am as far or farther than most of the student section from the band and we all are on beat with the band. The North endzone keeps rhythm with the band better than the East side does.

Acoustics may cause some delay but it won't cause them to sound faster. There is a youtube of the chant postgame from Saturday night in the student section. They're going so fast that you can't understand a word they're saying. I would post the link but can't youtube at work.

I pretty much stop after fight, fight, fight cause hearing the student section screws me up... Unless the people around me are drowning them out.

Nope. Sit right behind the students, they rush the **** out of it. It's not acoustics, we have no rhythm in our student body.

We need C34 to get the ball rolling with Cheer practice. Call up Scott and get something in the works.**

I bet it is due to the student section being broken up. The end zone people are probably off from what the east siders are yelling. We will have a more unified student section with the pending stadium enclosure.

Nothing to do with that - the students just don't know better

Not sure when the rushing started, but it's been like that for many years. If the first time you hear the chant is in the middle of the student section, you walk away thinking that you're hearing the rest of the stadium late because of echos and what not. They have no idea whatsoever they're doing it wrong. We need this **** addressed somehow. Freshman orientation, or in a flier handed out with student tickets.

I have a theory on this. I believe this started in 2004.

In 2003, I suggested to the Student Association that we start a kickoff cheer. ("Gooooo STATE! Go State!") It failed horrendously for a variety of reasons:
1) Some idiot decided to promote it as a new "tradition." You can't start a new tradition. Traditions are things that have endured. We were just starting a new cheer. Something to say at kickoffs other than "oooooooo-OOH!" That word alone probably caused a huge amount of backlash.
2) They said to only do it on MSU kickoffs. Any other school does it every kickoff. I don't know what idiot decided that, but it hurt.
3) The game we tried to start it at was Alabama. Drowned out by the Roll Tide cheer. Plus, combine the above "only on MSU kickoffs" idea with the fact we got shutout 31-0, and it was just doomed to failure.

In 2004, I noticed a group of students doing the "Maroon White Fight Fight Fight..." cheer on kickoffs. This has slowly caught on. Only problem is that it is WAY TOO LONG for a kickoff cheer. Early on, the play had been blown dead before the cheer finished. So it started getting sped up to try to finish before the return man caught the ball. And that bled over into the "Rock and Roll, Part 2" cheer.

Basically, we need a shorter kick off cheer. Since we are promoting the heck out of "Hail State," I think something along the lines of "Gooooo STATE! Hail State!" would work. But it's got to be shorter. And something that won't ruin our other cheers, like this has.

I sit right in front of them. They are that bad off. There are only two solutions to it... (1) have a mass education campaign or (2) have the band speed up the song

Why can't the yell just be a long "MAROON! WHITE!" Just one time too. Trying to fit a whole sentence into a chant sounds stupid and nobody knows what they're yelling except the home crowd.

Maroon/White is one of the best yells the crowd does. It'd be even cooler if one side yelled maroon at the kick, and then as the ball is falling the other half of the stadium yelled white.

THE REAL REASON THEY DO THAT, AND THE SOLUTION TO THE PROBLEM:

The reason the student section does this and is so much faster than the rest of the crowd is because of the kickoff chant. Think about it, the students are pretty much the only people in the stadium that do the kickoff chant, and to make sure it doesn't last forever they (the student section) say it fast as hell. There isn't a problem with doing it fast at the kickoff, however the bad habit carries over to the Hey song before and after the games.

That's why I wrote an email to Scott suggesting we try a "HAAAAAAAIIIL STATE!" kickoff chant (Similar to "ROOOOLLL TIDE!"). He said it was a good idea and worth consideration. I think it would make the kickoff chant better AND get the students to slow down on the "Hey Go State song".

Just a theory of mine. If it's a ****** idea please don't hold back.

You and I think a lot alike on this matter.

I also emailed Stricklin about this earlier this evening. But it was in the latter half of a 1300-word email, so who knows if he'll read it. A shorter kick-off cheer needs to happen.

No, it's not a ****** idea. I honestly think the best way to address it is through Stricklin, BUT have Dan Mullen come out on the mic and address it before a game and that will stop that problem. I was in section A and it was unbelievable how ahead of the stadium they were.

I sit in the student section, and it's not the acoustics. Those drunk bastards just don't have any soul. I bring this exact topic up damn near every game lately. I have no idea how there's 0 rhythm in our section at all.
