Master Schedule Release?

Hopefully it gets released this week. There has been a lot of turnover at the VHSL from retirements this year. And this causes new folks to take over certain task. It takes time so hopefully we will see it soon.

Also, remember that the ratings will no longer be calculated and provided by the League office. The Executive Committee of the VHSL voted to no longer have the office perform this task. (Before you bash the League Office on this, remember it was the League members through their representatives on the EC that made this change.) If I recall correctly, the responsibility now falls upon each Class to assemble this data. And I believe in most cases, the Class is requiring each Region to perform the calculations for their Region and submit it to the head official of the Class?

Our problem as fans is going to be that apparently there will be nowhere to look to see the standings for each Class or even each Region. Some Regions undoubtably will be on top of it and it will be made readily available through some social platform. But, I guarantee there will be some that fumble the ball and we may not have an accurate rating until the first week of the playoffs.

I heard that the master schedule was not being released till August. JR Tucker just finalized their schedule last week after scheduling conflicts with John Marshall.

The VHSL should 100% be in charge of the ratings. This is about playoffs they organize. That said, I wonder if they don't want to deal with it to free themselves up to police recruiting and transfers. (yes, I'm joking).

Danny, I hope changes are coming. There is new blood in the top two positions at the
League, and if there is a chance for change, this is the time. Todd Tarkington will be the one with the responsibility for enforcing the new transfer rule. He doesn’t come in with political baggage so hopefully he will stand strong and set a precedent. The new Executive Director and the Executive Committee have got to give Todd their unwavering support and backing.

Now that a different employee has the responsibility for the Master Schedule, we have to expect it to take longer. I don’t think the employee anticipated the amount of time it takes to resolve the myriad of problems that pop up. It’s like putting a 5000 piece jigsaw puzzle together and finding out that you have to keep tracking down missing pieces. And you can not display the puzzle
until you have every last piece in place. And everybody is screaming for a look at the puzzle.

And honestly, I truly expect that the compiling and posting of the ratings will be an unmitigated disaster. The League made a really bad decision with regards to farming it out to the membership. I could be wrong, and I pray that I am, but I foresee a troubled road ahead.

Good news DP is that as bumpy as the road might get, if it is a disaster they can learn from it and rectify it in 2026.

I do know that the VHSL has a Communications Director. My idea would be to have the Classes collect the Regional Playoff Formats from each of their four regions by August 15th and then have the VHSL post a press release on their site on August 22nd which outlines how each region within each class will be determining their playoff representatives.

And at that time, this, along with the state playoff format should also be posted within the “State Playoff Format” link which is already on the Football Page of the VHSL Website.

Sherando opens with Amherst and Loudoun County , also have Kettle Run , Brentsville, Jefferson WV ( loaded), and Handley who might have the best QB in the State. I honestly could see the Warriors struggling to be .500 this year unless they get a lot of help from upcoming young players. Looking forward to hosting Amherst first game, should be a good one .

Hamspear are you local to the Stephens City, Winchester area? I think you are way off in your predictions. At worst they will finish 7-3 but i could see them actually going 9-1. Sherando will surprise a lot of local and non local people this year. They have a solid set of "skills position" players this year, honestly better than last year, especially at the wide outs. Returners in the backfield along with some very strong additions. The kid at QB would have easily started for most teams this past season and will be no "drop off" from what they had last year in Carlson. On defense they did lose an all state linebacker but they have another who will easily be all state this year and next. I guess we can revisit this conversation in November.

If Sherando plays the entire season with half of the heart and guts that they did when I saw them play against Salem in the playoffs, then I think they will be just fine. And that's not even counting any talent that they may have back as well.

oh I’m very local, for many years. There was a day not to long ago most people knew Hamspear in relation to Sherando football, but I am old now and don’t post like I used to.I’m looking at line losses are pretty significant. All State at Linebacker is a big Statement, since Sherando has only had maybe two in the history. I agree they could win some of those games , guess We will see in November. I agree the qb coming in is a very good passer, yet to see if he can make the impact with his legs. A tougher schedule this year than last. We will see in November. I hope to see another playoff run like last year.

I agree they did lose 3 starters off the offensive line, and that will be the big question mark. They are returning a starter at tackle and the center was second team all-state last year and I believe will be a four year varsity starter this year. I think the coaching staff will get that unit back to last years level though. As for another all-state linebacker, watch Carter this year at the OLB spot, hes the real deal for sure, and I think he definitely has all-state talent.
Its possible I'm just too big of fan to make an unbiased call, but I do honestly feel this team will surprise a lot of people and have another strong season. My final prediction is 8-2

I hope you are correct! I don’t know the players coming up from JV like I used to, but I still enjoy going to the games and supporting the team. Good luck to the Warriors

Not trying to put down Edna, but are we sure these are the only two options?
When Lora Bickley retired last year from the League, it left a void that they are struggling to fill. After 55 years, Lora knew how to find answers and resolve issues. That came from experience that the current regime just doesn’t have yet. They will get there, it’s just going to take a few seasons.

Another aspect of what Lora brought to the table was “relationships.” She had dealt with virtually every Principal and every AD across our state, all her life. When something was missing, or in conflict, Lora could simply send an email, or call the person that had the answers. Lora was so well respected that everyone wanted to be sure they got her what she needed. Therefore, they responded promptly.

And this didn’t stop at the borders of Virginia. The schedule has to account for EVERY team schedule that a Virginia school plays, no matter where they are. Lora had friends and acquaintances in states all around the borders of Virginia and beyond.

Certainly Lora provided all of this contact information for her successor. But it doesn’t guarantee they will get the same level of response back that Lora did. It goes back to those long term relationships she had with thousands of school officials.

I’m hoping we will see the Master Schedule this week. It almost certainly will have a few mistakes. That has been the case every year. Remember, the League depends on the information it receives from the AD’s. If it has a mistake, and the program they run it through doesn’t pick up on it, then it gets posted incorrectly. That could be as simple as the start time being off, to the wrong day of the week posted, and in extreme cases, the wrong opponent listed. So expect some problems when we finally do get our hands on the schedule.

No doubt that learned experience and relationship-building served her well.

I’m just a big fan of not reducing everything down to two choices. I feel like pretty much everything is better if we acknowledge there are quite a few ways to achieve goals. For some reason (perhaps due to political voting systems in the US), people really like to act like there are only two options when presented with a challenge to solve. /rant

DP - I can say having known Todd Tarkenton personally, he's a very good man. I was thrilled to hear he got that position. I got to know him over the years when he was the Principal at Green Run. While the relationship and trust with the Head Basketball Coach Kenneth Harris there was a big reason why we had many of our VirginiaPreps.com Basketball Classics at the school, Tarkenton was EXTREMELY supportive of the event and loved having it there. He gets it and I think will be a major asset.

I’ve heard nothing but good things about Todd. And he got an endorsement that trumps all others. Lora B. said he is a great hire, so that is all I needed to hear.

How is Todd kin to Chip Tarkenton, the former highly esteemed sportscaster on WRIC channel 8 in Richmond?

Is Todd more of an athletics guy? Or more on the administrative side?

I would be all for separating athletics from activities to be honest. We need athletics administrators running the athletics side. Someone well-versed in overseeing and establishing structure. Someone with a team he or she can depend on to get stuff done.

We also need people keen on the event production side of things. Right now, if you go to Liberty, they slap up the sponsors on the video board and cycle them through all day, have one or two concession stands, direct the teams to their locker rooms, and pull out the tables for the trophies. State Championship events need to be special and there is so much that can be done, but it's operated extremely lazy and do the bare minimum kind of way. There's no pride from the VHSL in putting on a great event.

Also, at one time, I saw a list of 24 people working for the VHSL. Now, I'm not sure if they were full time, or even part time employees. Maybe they were committee members. I forget...but it was a list of 24. Sixteen were on the academic side and eight were on the athletics side.

Sorry, not sorry, but someone who is an SME for Forensics competitions for example should be nowhere near having a say in how high school sports are run in the state.

I hope this guy works out and proves to be an asset to the VHSL.

From what I understood, they are close. Just working out some kinks with the system they use. Probably in the next couple of weeks like someone else mentioned.
It’s a monumental task from start to finish, compiling all the necessary information. And it’s a brand new endeavor for the young lady charged with the responsibility. She will learn a lot and next year it will be much easier for her, I’m sure.
