Matt Wyatt made a good point on the postgame yesterday...

If you play a team like Alcorn, you expect every play to go your way. If they don't, the only ones you remember are the plays that didn't. About 90% of the game yesterday, State did what they wanted to with Alcorn. You can't take anything from a game like yesterday because you don't know the true intensity we played with. If there is one thing I don't get about the play calling is the use of Perkins. I have yet to see us try to put him on the edge except Memphis. It's up the gut and the guy weights 190 pounds. He is just not going to get you short yardage.

Let me add that Alcorn QB looked pretty damn good. I'll be shocked if Alcorn doesn't win the SWAC.

Simply put, we took care of business. On to Houston.

playing 12 man football in Canada.

From the CL article...

http://www.clarionledger....30105/9300334/Air-Canada

He said a number of schools recruited him - Buffalo, Akron, Syracuse,
Toledo - but the only ones that offered him scholarships were in
Canada.

And he wanted badly to play in the United States.

The hookup happened when Collins worked a Minnesota Vikings camp and got film on Bridge from Vikings coaches.

He is good enough to play at the I-A level easily and maybe good enough to play a the BCS conference level. On the one long run, Nikoe Whitley should have tackled him at mid-field, but just took a bad angle. On the long pass down the right sideline, the QB just made a great throw. We got pressure and had the receiver covered and he just put the ball right on the receivers hands.

campus seemed dead, the atmosphere in the game was subdued. I think we ALL had an off game. We needed it, we've been revved up for a good long time now.

Bottom line is, it's tough to get up for a I-AA game, especially against a pretty bad I-AA team. We were very flat and still won by 23. Weshould have wonbigger, but I don't think there's going to be any residual carryover. I think we'll be up for some revenge in Houston next Saturday.

We won big, and our fan base is expecting to win these games big. It's going to be tough to get our fan base to sell out a game like that. It's a pretty uninteresting game in terms of competition, and I'm sure many people were like why pay the money when its on FSN and I can watch a guaranteed win from home.

plus games at 11:00am suck even when you play a good team

plus why run up the score much worse than we did on an instate, lower level team. beat them handily while running new things in the offense, i.e. treat it as a practice. mullen has said multiple times that they'd like to schedule a game with a swac team from within the state every year. if we go out there and hang 65 on them, then they may be less willing to come play. (and i know they need the money)

to coincide with the excitement of a season opener. Plus - the 11 AM kickoff didn't help. But we still had legitimately 48-50K there which was pretty good.

were all freshman huh? Whitney missing that tackle, Russell throwing a pick? Our D shut them out in the 2nd half and other than 2 plays we shut them down in the first half.

Any MSU game we win by more than 21 is a great game IMO. I would encourage everyone to adopt a similar stance.

It is then a Noon start for them and not as excitement killing. And I agree DS. Play them the first game of the year. It allows the crowd to be jacked up and the SWAC teams will probably bring more fans too.

Even with Mississippi's 11:20 start we all missed the entire 1st quarter of the LSU-Tennesse game. They need to move the 11:20 game to 11:00, not to 12:00 and add a rule that no team can be asked to play more than 1 home game per year at 11:00.

The time zones work. Having the east play the 11:00 am game would change nothing. It would be 12:00 noon their time and 11:00 central time, not causing any additional encroachment into the2:30 game at all. Vandy is the only east team in the central time zone. They would be stuck with an 11:00 start for home games.

Our game started at 12:00 Eastern time yesterday. The LSU-Tennessee game started at 3:30 Eastern time yesterday.

They are 3 and 1 and i believe they be pretty good in the SWAC this year. Of course i could be way off, but the qb alone should make them very competitive.

For a game like that to get an even bigger crowd, you have to tie something in with it to get people to show up. I know we had baseball and band alumni weekend, but it has to be even more than that.

We had a great crowd like you said considering everything. I know Dan was not all that happy with the crowd, and I understand where he is coming from, but MSU and the AD has to also understand that for a game like that, they have to tie something in with it. Whether that is the opening game, homecoming, or do like a lot of schools and use a game like that and designate it as "parent's weekend". People are not going to seriously buy the MSU/Alcorn State "rivalry" thing. You can't just schedule a game like that and have nothing associated with it at 11 AM and then ***** at the fans for not showing up. And yes, I was there and watched the whole game.

Also, we could use that game as "high school student day", which MSU has done before in the past, or "military day" or something. There's a lot of things that we could do.

Maybe MSU needs to recruit Canada. That kid was D-I good. Speed like that knows no conference.

I'd be surprised if Alcorn doesn't at least win their division in the SWAC. They were much, much better talent wise and coaching wise than Jackson State was last year. And you have to love a coach that wears a long sleeve t-shirt.

I also understand that there's no way they're going to limit the early game to just East teams. A noon start isn't that much better than an 11:00 start anyway.

I really thought the 11am start sucked. The atmosphere was dead (as compared to weeks past). All that is true. But it was more of a live scrimmage against a weaker opponent and everyone knew it. It would not have mattered what time it started the atmosphere would not have been electric. I don't disagree with having these games. After three tough ones it was good to have a game like this. Houston will not be a sandwich game now. They should have ample time to prepare and go out there for a road trip and bring back a win!

GO DAWGS!!!!

And your comment on the 2:30 game and a game starting at noon made no sense if you understood the time zones.

Our game wasn't the one thatran throughthe entire 1st quarter of the LSU-UT game, Mississippi's game was. My point was that the 11:20 CT (12:20 ET) game (i.e. the one Mississippi played in) should start at 11:00 CT (12:00 ET) so that it doesn't run into the 2:30 CT (3:30 ET) game. How <17>ing hard can that possibly be to understand? If you start 2 college football games 3:10 apart, the first one will almost always run into the second one.

1.Alcorn isnot a badteam.
2.They had every thing to play for but nothing to lose.
3.It is expected to down a little after a big win. It happens a lot.
4.There were not a lot of big plays they only scored 16 points plus one of those touch down was not a touch down. The ref's got that one worng. I ammore worried about the penalties.
5.Be glad this was the game not to be up for. If it was next week we would have lost. Now maybe it's out of their system.

....Capitol Classic. This was their Super Bowl, the game their coaches had circled and were probably game-planning for since last winter. They played tough andthey played hard. Mississippi State isn't talented enough to take games off and cruise to easy wins against anybody. MState still won by 33.

BTW, the 11:00 AM start wasnt bad. Some of the other posters were right, make this some special "Parents Day" or "Middle School/Senior High Day" so some kids who've never been to a D-1 game can make it and enjoy the experience. However, it was okay to enjoy being at Scott Field, then leave early enough to watch the big games on TV (either at home, the hotel, or the tailgate) on a beautiful Fall afternoon.

to start the game. It was obvious that after the opening offense and defensive series we thought we could coast to an easy win. Our players were then stunned after the TD run by their quarterback and the subsequent TD catch. It was a nice recovery on our part and hopefully a nice wake-up call as we then took care of business. However Alcorn State came to play. Hats off to them.
