Maybe Germans: When is earliest StarkVegas reference?

I know it has become much more visible over the past 15 years or so, but I know we would say StarkVegas back in 1978. I am pretty sure we did not coin the term. So are any SPSers sure of earlier usage?

I really started to notice it more and more when we quit playing games in Jackson.

I have no doubts that you are correct. I'm just saying when I first started hearing it a lot. I was in school at that time (Rockey's last two years, and the start of Sherrill).

I have heard it my whole life (40+ *cough cough* years) as a supposedly derogatory term from OM family members. I'm glad we finally embraced it, because it completely neutered the bastards. They hate it now, because the national media even use it.

The first place that I remember hearing it was on TV commercials for the furniture store that preceded Ricks Furniture. I think maybe it belonged to his Dad. That would have been late 70’s or early 80’s but I’m sure it predated that.

It absolutely started as an insult, with the meaning that Starkville was about as unlike Vegas as a town could be. By adopting the name, the city and university said to the world, "We know our town is nothing like Las Vegas, and we are glad we have nothing in common with Sin City. We like small town life and could not care less what you think of us." I think that same attitude is why Dawg fans are so passionate about their cowbells. "You think you insult us by calling MSU a cow college. We know we are a cow college and are damned proud of it."

Yes, but this is not some foreign concept. It's basic verbal/behavioral self-defense. We should have done it years ago. The whole state of Mississippi should do more of it too.

I graduated from State in 1972 and it was used back then in a derogatory way by MSU students.

StarkPatch had a run but folded. I really preferred that.

I think Rece Davis may have helped make the term popular nationally. I remember he would call it Stark Vegas back when he was calling Thursday night games on ESPN back in the early 2000s.

1978 pre dates Rob Jay. That was the Rubenstein years I believe.

In the late 80s we used the term "Starkpatch".
