Things look pretty bleak right now. This season is not going to have a happy ending. That's a foregone conclusion.
However, if you back away and look at the big picture, the only glaring deficiency on the team is our offense. Now, that's a pretty gaping hole, but the good news is, we have a good D already in place. We aren't looking at a total gut job.
In spite of how catastrophically awful our offense has been, we've had at least 3 conference games we lost that were well within reach, if only we had a semi-functional offense. The D has performed remarkably well in spite of not only not getting any support from the offense, but having an offense that repeatedly puts the defense in terrible situations.
Raises and extensions don't usually seem to be in order after 4-8/3-9 seasons, but I would raise and extend Clayton White. Go ahead and do it now.
It will be difficult to attract proven OC talent here, given Beamer's tenuous position, but if an OC is looking at our defense, with White returning, I think that gives some reassurance. You don't have to come in here in and score 30+ ppg. The roster is not devoid of offensive talent. We have the talent that we should be able to score 25 ppg, and I think that's a very realistic, and reasonable goal for next season. Couple that with our D and you're probably looking at an 8+ win season. If you can get an OC who can have sustained drives, even ones that don't result in points, the
Our ST has not been what it was under Lembo, but it's not a glaring weakness.
Again, I know OC is a pretty big piece to fill, but considering how awful Shula was, it should not be at all difficult to find a significant upgrade. In fact, I think it should be easy.
Just hire an OC that makes sense and give him full autonomy to build his staff.
