MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (June 25, 2019) – After guiding the West Virginia University baseball team to one of its best seasons in program history, coach Randy Mazey has been named the East Regional Coach of the Year, the American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) announced on Tuesday. The accolade is the second in three seasons for Mazey, who also earned the ABCA honor in 2017. It is the fourth time a Mountaineer coach has been recognized as regional coach of the year, while Mazey is the first to collect the award more than once. Mazey also was named the 2019 Big 12 Coach of the Year, on May 21, the first coach in program history to earn the distinction from the Big 12 Conference. Mazey led the Mountaineers to a record-breaking 2019 campaign that culminated in the program’s second NCAA Championship appearance in three years and 13th in program history. Seeded No. 15 nationally, WVU was selected to host an NCAA Regional for the first time since 1955. West Virginia (38-22, 13-11 Big 12) won 38 games, second-most all-time, and was ranked in the top-25 for the final seven weeks of the season. WVU’s 13 Big 12 wins and 13-11 record is tied for its best Big 12 mark, matching a 13-11 slate in 2013, while the Mountaineers were one of two teams to win six Big 12 series, their most conference series wins in a single season since winning six Big East series in 2003. West Virginia made the Big 12 Championship Game for the second time in four years and is one of two teams to make four consecutive Big 12 semifinals. In seven seasons in Morgantown, Mazey is 227-176. He is the fourth-winningest coach in team history and the fifth to eclipse the 200-win mark. In his 13-year career, Mazey is 414-336-2.
