I really hate that it is being torn down because it is one of the most historic spots on campus, considering the dominance of our basketball program in the 50s and 60s.

Question for the Pack: I seem to distinctly recall Jack Cristil referring to the facility as, "Maroon Gymnasium," when he was broadcasting games there. However, it seems to have only been called "McCarthy Gym" in recent years. Am I losing my mind, or does anyone else remember it being called Maroon Gymnasium?

You can own a piece of McCarthy history from Marketplace. Doesn't look like they are old or anything:

Had a work study job there supervising the gym for 4 years while in school. Had Jerry Rice ask me if he could shoot ball....I couldn't even speak for a second. I said h3ll yea you are Super Bowl MVP and he just cracked up. The guys....mostly football players and ex high school guys treated him as a normal dude on the court. Pretty cool to see....and yes I shouldn't have let him in the gym but he was Jerry freakin Rice!!

I picked up a few of the bleacher boards with intentions of making some benches similar to the last photo. I'm not sure if I will leave the wood as is, try to clean them in some way or just put some polyurethane on them as is. Any tips would be appreciated. I'm also thinking about leaving the gum on there. It's kinda gross, but also part of the history.

That is a sweet grab and I would use them as is. I would probably give them a light scrub with a diluted dish soap. A light coat of boiled linseed oil would probably do them some good.

We were the Maroons before Bulldogs. Remember Jack using it during football broadcasts.
"The first teams representing Mississippi A&M, forerunner of Mississippi State, were called the Aggies. When the school officially became Mississippi State College in 1932, they were nicknamed the Maroons. The nickname officially became "Bulldogs" in 1961. However, "Bulldogs" had been used unofficially since at least 1905"

We need to edit Wiki to say the name was affectionally used in later years on Six Pack Message Board as "Marons"

Dorman is obviously harder to kill than a roach. That sumbeach is going to ugly up the place forever.
It would be a million times better if they simply just painted the brick like they're doing at the Hump. I don't know what the hell they're waiting for to do that. Cheap, easy, and a huge upgrade.

I remember when it was brand new and considered the darling of the campus. It was built on the site where the original baseball field was located. Built in the mid-60s.

My memory goes back to 1971 and it was McCarthy Gym back then. Don't remember Jack calling it the Maroon Gym. He might had spoke of it being the Maroon Gym but I don't remember him routinely calling it that.

I saw Pete Maravich hang 52 on our Maroon Bulldogs in 1969. Saw MSU beat the Rebs in the last game played there in 1975 100-80, my freshman year. Then played many intramural games, and pickup game, when I should have been studying. It’s an old school gym with a great wooden floor. When Humphrey Coliseum was built it had a rubber floor and had all the fans raised away from the floor. Last 20 years they’ve been trying to turn it into an old school gym, like the Pit, or as it’s called McCarthy.

Damn metal frame windows got to go too. It's ugly no matter what. Just burn it down! We need a S EZ addition just to hide that bass turd.

Article I read, said that it was named McCarthy after his death in 1975.
