Went to Florida about a week ahead of the game, well Dec. 26, and stayed with relatives. Took 'em all out to eat, on the Atlantic Coast (Coco) and as a fluke, I decided to wear my Kentucky cap.

There were 6 Kentucky caps in that particular restaurant that evening, 5 days before kickoff, and on the opposite coast of the Outback Bowl. I left wondering how many had left their caps at the hotel room.

Kentucky fans didn't just dominate the host venue, they dominated the host state, for days leading up to kickoff. We saw Kentucky fans everywhere, all the time.

At the game, parking was a hoot. I'm from a very small town. The folks who parked immediately to our right were from our town, and two spots to our left, the same. We walked in together, laughing our arses off, and collected 8 or 10 more local folks on the short walk to the stadium entry. Finally, I suggested we do a huge group picture, at our gate, given the "coincidence" of meeting 20 or so folks from a town of 2000.

When we got the photo back (that's right kids, it used to take a while to get 'em back) there was a couple no one knew . . . . but they were in Blue.

I remember this one old van parked near us, and when the rear door opened about 6 or 7 college age kids came rolling out, looking pretty rough . . . . one said they had done an all-nighter to make the drive.

We sat on the Penn State side, and I had actually anticipated meeting some Penn State fans. There were none I saw in the upper deck.

There had been talk during bowl prep, that the Outback Bowl could be Joe Paterno's last, and that he might turn the reins over to a guy named "Sanduski . . . ."

I have seen references to our having hauled 40,000 fans, but the most common estimate at the time was 50,000 plus.

We lost, and on the way out, I parted from my crowd, to take a leak at a mid-level entry way. This was my first experience with "club-level seating." There was carpet and leather couches, everywhere . . . . I have done Club Level at MCB since, for $70.00 a throw (probably a lot more, now.)

Having handled the call of nature, I exited next to a guy wearing Blue and White, but he seemed depressed, like with his head down. I slapped him on the back and said, "cheer up, we'll kick their arses, next year." He turned his head, and by damn, he was wearing a Penn State cap. I shook his hand, and told him I had hoped to meet a Penn State fan, and he was the only one I got close to . . . . on Penn State's side of the stadium. I congratulated him on the win, and thanked him for his interest in college football. I didn't have the camera on me, or I would have snapped one of him to show my friends who had exited prior to me, what a Penn State fan looked like.

A few years later, I and about 500 football fans joined WildcatFaithful.com en mass within like a week of another site selling out, and lots of us met Mel McCain, at a Spring Game. He wasn't a Football first kind of guy, but his site for a period was overwhelmingly football folks. He bragged to me once that Kentucky Fans dominated the host venues at the SEC tourney, etc., and I asked him if he'd done a bowl game yet.

Unfortunately, old Mel didn't quite make it to the Bowl streak from 2006 to 2010, as he passed in Nov., 2004.

I wish he'd made it to the Music City Bowl in December, 2006. I didn't even get to meet a Clemson fan at that one. There were very few there, and they mostly left after we got a 28-7 lead.

Seriously, if you have never done a UK Bowl Game, JUST DO IT. You can even do public transport in the host City, whichever it is, because they will be packed with Cat fans. It's a party for like 3 days prior to and a couple after the actual game, 'cause lots of folks make a week of it from Christmas to New Years.

Agree with the comment about the number of fans. There had to be over 50K UK fans. It was basically all UK fans except a small Penn State group in the corner, just like CWS. And the stadium was full. We spent the previous evening in Ybor City, which probably wasn't the wisest thing to do with an 11am kickoff, but we made it to the game OK. Great time except the outcome of the game.

I remember there was a parade the night before. After the uk band passed, the fans went into the street and followed them to the end. I was at the end of the route. It seemed like they were a quarter mile back. Watched for five minutes as all those UK fans walked past.

Was there also. Great trip. Ate at Bern's Steak House (maybe the best steak in the USA), met the new Ky. Senator Jim Bunning at the game. Fun time except for the final score.

My precious but now departed wife and I drove down four days before game. Took in races at Tampa Bay for a couple days, went to a CATS practice mingled with coaches and some players. Three of our tail-gating couples drove down and we took in the parade. Absolute sea of Blue! Encourage all to turn out and pass-a-good-time with your BBN friends!

I was there. The night before was an adventure in Ybor City. We left Lexington at 8pm on Wednesday night (12/30), arrived in Tampa at around 9am on Thursday morning. Napped, went to Ybor (which was packed with Kentucky fans) for NYE, got back the hotel room at around 5am, got up at 9am....game at 11am NY morning. By the time we got back to the hotel room that night after roughly 48 hours of driving and partying with little sleep. It was crash time.

Nothing like that weekend.

Did the Clemson game with my dad in 2006. Glad he has gotten to see a UK bowl game, and, a win. I went back in 07 (beat FSU) and 08 (Liberty vs East Carolina). We dominated the crowd on every bowl trip. But, nothing like seeing 40K or more 12 hours away on New Years morning. It'll be hard to beat that.

We went down two days before, and stayed for two days after. The sea of blue in Ybor City and the day of the game was amazing. Just a fantastic trip aside from not winning the game.

Remember like it was yesterday, walking out of Raymond James and even in defeat thinking this was one of the great days in Kentucky football, playing on New Years Day after all those years. We got back to the car and my friends who came with me were crushed...devastated by losing and I looked up at the florida sunshine and said to them...."savor the day fellas, you never know, might be another 20 years before were back here.

Only took 17 :sunglasses:....and they will all be back with me in Jacksonville.

You're all very lucky to have gone. I was a broke freshman working at the Best Buy trying to watch the game at work on the display models :joy:

The play where James Whalen went down was brutal to see on tv. I hope no one had good enough seats to see it in that detail

Best bowl trip I have ever had, and believe me, I've had some GREAT ONES. The only bad thing was the Final Score.

I lived in Tampa for about 8 years in my 20s, the game fortunately was during this time period. My dad is a PSU grad, but worked at UK. We we're raised PSU fans and UK fans. My brother and father pulled for PSU but my sister and I had started bleeding too much UK blue. Sadly Dad and my bro got the last laugh.

I spent much time in Ybor city while I lived there, no time was better than the night b4 the game in Ybor. It was literally a sea of people with UK gear. Our fans took over the place like I had never seen. And mind you I saw Ybor the night b4 many Outback bowls being a resident at the time. No one single fan base ever filled it lik UK did that night.

@TeoJ loved your fathers writing man. Always bought a Times and skipped the Tribune because of your fathers writing and the Times great sports section. You have a very talented father, respect my friend.

We were beating their asses until James Whalen broke his arm.

Just seemed to fall apart after that.

Was a great time. Blue everywhere. Thought we would win the game too, up 14-3 but then just couldn't get anything going after that.

Was at that game. Was against Syracuse. Whalen was all over the place, but when he went down so did UK's chances.

That was also the game where Mumme let Syracuse score towards the end so we could get the ball back.

We kept moving the ball into the redzone and coming up empty. That became a staple of Mumme-ball over the next 2 years.

I was also at the Outback Bowl and it was incredible until 2nd half. A sellout crowd of 66k where probably 45-50k were UK fans on New Years Day. I'd love to think that UK fans will show up in large numbers for the Taxslayer Bowl.

Was it? Man, I'm going senile at 36
Dec 1999. Remember walking out of the stadium disappointed with the loss but full of so much hope. Boy was I wrong. KY would not make it to another bowl game until 2006. Very much like the drought this decade until now.

DACats86 and JDHoss, yes, the new Hack is the same as the old, but I walk a little slower, and don't run up the football ramps like I still was want to do in my 30's. :)

I really wanted Mel to see the turnout for a Kentucky Bowl game.

He and I had some really funny conversations, him being clearly a basketball first fan, and me a football first fan. He was collecting memorabilia and I offered to help out, for fundraising for the old site.

After 20 minutes of talking past each other, he asked, "Are you talking about football memorabilia . . . . . I didn't know there was any." My response was on par, "Mel, that's the only kind I or my friends have."

We need to do a reunion, sometime, from the old regulars, like Poodoo, UKBob, Trublujr (who recruited me to WCF), RV, etc.

I remember, it was awesome, there were two party's that night, one at Ybor city and the other at the teams hotel, I was at that one downtown and the atmosphere was incredible. Tampa was great and the stadium was new then and there were at least 40.000 Kentucky fans there and the Penn State fans were sunburned. Only negative was UK lost the game, but it was close till the end, looking forward to going to Jacksonville.
