The Commercial Appeal announced in today's edition that they are assigning a beat writer to the bears and the rest of the SEC gets wire reports. This based on the large Ole Miss market (per them). I for one will cancel today so they can better understand their market. I'm calling all Memphis area dogs to do the same.

They have never really covered us anyway. Now Tennessee fans....they could be of some concern if they all cancelled.

I was listening to the George Lapides show last week, and they told him it's because Memphis is not an SEC town. I promise you there's more people living in the Memphis area that go to Starkville, Fayetteville, and Knoxville for home games than Memphis fans that show up for home games.

That excuse is just a budget cop out. More Memphis kids go to State now than any other SEC school so not really sure where the OM bs is coming from.

I thought kyle veazey was already their beat writer? did tsun already jettison him?

I guess tsun does not need anysports investigation at his beloved university...

Kyle has never been a beat writer for the CA. He is their sports enterprise/business" writer.

have a day in the paper or hour on the radio devoted to each of the schools. This beat writer for tsun idea is not too smart. You are offending more people than you are serving. This guy should cover like Alabama on Monday, Arkansas on Tuesday, MSU on Wednesday, tsun on Thursday, Tennessee on Friday, type of thing. The sports radio guys can easily get a beat writer for each of the schools to do a segment or two on a given day also.

The Memphis market is more than the Grizzlies and Memphis Basketball. I understand those are the two major topics, but there is time to serve some other customers. If you keep it a specific day/time then the fans will know when to tune in.

Gary said that covering schools with beat writers was stupid. That you can get all the day-to-day, recruiting, and game storiesfrom a million other places. His thought was that the CA should only have columnists and do more opinion.<div>
</div><div>I agree. Newspapers should be moving towards more original content to compete and beat writers are generally not providing that. There is already a beat writer for the Clarion Ledger doing that work. How much more original material will the CA guy have versus the CL guy?</div><div>

I agree Bobby. Just on my observations, I would say OM has a few more fans than State in the Memphis metro area. Therefore,I would not have guessed three times as many alumni. But I guess when your team sucks, you tend to not wear the garb.
