Memphis Melrose

Anybody know anything about Memphis Melrose, how good they are supposed to be, any D-I recruits, etc? They play at Madison Central Friday night....

They were a hotbed for talent until the Albert Means scandal. I haven't heard much about them since.

not great, but not awful. They have some good talent come through there.

there's several private schools in Memphis that woud handle them now. Madison Central should win (assuming they're decent).

Albert Means actually played at Trezevant. They did have David Paine and Kindall Morehead, and you can bet the coach got paid well to send those players to Alabama. The coach back then was Tim Thompson, and I think he was brought down during the Albert Means scandal as well for some other players, though Means wasn't his.

Melrose produced Cedric Wilson and a handful of other top players to go with the ones above. They were an elite program, but they aren't exactly there anymore. Memphis city football as a whole has gone downhill some in recent years.

I saw them play when they had the cooper kid that played running back at Miami. To be able to wear gold cleats you have to be able to run a 4.3 40. Cooper was wearing gold as well as some other ones. They are usually at least a playoff team.

They probably weren't really gold cleats. Many of them tape up and spray paint their shoes before gametime depending on their school color. It's all about the look.

Sorry should have said gold painted, but do we ever really know what is gold plated in memphis? Anyway Just figured they would have some guys that would be pretty quick for a high school football game.

They were always in the Top 5 in the Memphis Metro Dandy Dozen. I think they have fallen off pretty good in the past few years.

That is, until they lost last weekend. The class of the league this year is supposed to be MUS, White Station, and Olive Branch. It kills me that White Station sucked donkey nuts when I went there, but they're now a perennial powerhouse.

When I was in HS it seemed like it was always ECS Briarcrest CBHS Melrose MUS Houston and Germantown.

Those were almost guaranteed.
