If it gets any bigger they need to rebrand to something more generic. The number 12 doesn't mean anything no mo'

The bigger thing is they offered the option of expulsion after 5 years.

Thats the first team offering that. And a conference turned it down. That's what people should be focused on - expulsion of members is the slippery slope that leads to a blue blood only league.

And they were willing to forego a conference payout for the initial 5 year period. I’m genuinely intrigued as to where Memphis was planning on coming up with this kind of cash, and maybe that was part of the reason for the quick rejection.

$200M to the Big12 in conference sponsorships, a $25M exit fee from the AAC, and another $100-200M in forgone conference payouts over the next 5 years? Not to mention the $225M Liberty Bowl renovation that they’re still completing. Do they actually have a plan for raising all this money?

Memphis’s enrollment it shrinking the city around it is becoming more dangerous by the day. The stadium is off campus and no one wants to walk to their car at night …good call by the big 12

Yep....Fred was a Billionaire+ and I'm sure he left a large part to the Tigers' athletics. He certainly left a lot more than 200 million to them. I w ould guess maybe a half billion, but doubt that would ever be made public. He really loved his hometown college team.

Jackson, except double the size. Has a few decent things due to that, but also double the BS.

Pretty embarrassing for Memphis, tbh

We literally had dumbasses on here two weeks ago wishing we were Memphis lol. They couldn’t even buy their way into a sh1tty Big12
State would never leave the sec. They shouldn't either as long as State is moderately successful.

My original post could have been worded better. however having won one game in conference in two years, picked last again and the free flow of cash from much richer programs. It is an intriguing thought to have.

Is it better to be a big successful fish in a small pond? or is it better to be a rich whipping post in a big pond?

I've read a few Memphis facebook feeds and message boards. Some of their fans are happy winning and remaining in the AAC.

I wouldn't suggest State ever go down that far. But I wouldn't lose any sleep if State ended up in the Big12 or acc one day.

All true. And the nice suburbs are getting worse and worse with rentals. And those rentals being Rented by gangsters with tax fraud money. See the OM shooting this weekend. That was a rental house. I really don't know how this city survives. Because I would guess 50% of the population lives off government assistance and another 20% live off fraud schemes through every state and federal program.

Also .... back to sports... it didn't help that Memphis just went on probation for basketball.

Cordova's been headed downhill for 20 years, which is where that shooting happened.

I don't know why property values drop so quickly around those two towns (Jackson and Memphis). The flight is very fast, especially in the anywhereville suburbia neighborhoods.

They’ll get in. Maybe not now. But soon.
That's what I suspect too. Conference will simmer on those incremental revenues with exit options and realize it's too much to leave on the table given the low risk.

All true. But the latest thing is these huge house parties in Collierville and Germantown and Desoto county. It's becoming a big issue. So much so, that City of Collierville is suing one home owner. Then a month ago Olive Branch PD had sobriety road blocks to deter the parties in wedgewood.

If MSU were no longer in the SEC it would destroy the university and Starkville. You should lose sleep over it.

I guess anything’s possible when you’re on your deathbed, but his contributions to Memphis athletics have been made pretty public, and so far they haven’t been anywhere near that level.

He made a $50M commitment to U of M athletics in ‘23 that was going to be split in half to support the Liberty Bowl renovation and NIL. Just last week, Memphis announced a record breaking $32M fundraising year (roughly a third of what Selmon just announced) which included the first $10M payment from Fred that is to be spread out over a 5 year period. So again… the math just isn’t adding up to me

If they got that kind of money to spend, just go buy a 30-million-dollar team, go undefeated, win the AAC and get into the play off. That kind of money you don't need a P4 conference. They can win it all.

Yeah, adjust to not having money or support. I bet that would turn out great.
If State loses to AzSt, it will be an Orange take over a few weeks later. If State loses to AzSt and Tennessee and Texas.... that stadium will be a ghost town for the remainder.

But that check though....

Financial support.
Judging from our recruiting, there's not much of that for football either. People will support a winner more than they will a loser. And we'd be more of a winner competing against our peers (ACC/Big 12 level schools).

I keep going back to the question: what is the amount we are willing to burn for the following?

1) Win non-conf games
2) Beat mid SEC teams (Arkansas, Texas A&M and Missouri this year)
2) Win enough to make the playoffs (Florida, Ole Miss, Tenn)

I am guessing this is a about this much:

1) $8-$10M
2) $15M
3) $20-40M
