From a booster who met with Cal today the U of M not only matched but surpassed UK's offer. Thats what slowed things down today. He declined this offer.

No its 100% truth. A few boosters as stated in the commercial appeal added a couple mill on top of what Memphis offered. Direct quote from Cal "Guys that means alot to me but this time it is more then money"

FedEx is planning yet another round of layoffs due to economic recession and a 75% drop in profits. However, the CEO has plenty of spare cash to throw around when college basketball is at stake. Way to lead by example, Fred.

Maybe the gubbamint can slap a 90% tax on Mr. Smith in order to fund the low level employees salary.... how dare Mr. Smith spend his money on what he wants to...

that is not directly linked to Fed Ex. You make it sound like he gave some working stiffs the pink slip and mortgaged a fleet of jets in order to keep John Calipari. The money did not come from the Fed Ex checking account. It's his personal money...he can do what he pleases with it.

Yep, commercial appeal reporter was just on Sportscenter confirming it. He also said Mike Anderson, Tim Floyd, and Andy Kennedy are the top 3 candidates to replace Calipari. Anyone think there is a chance Renaldo Sidney decommits if Floyd jumps ship? I don't know if he would or not, but I'll be rooting for Floyd to get the job and crossing my fingers with Sidney.

But if you think he can do anything he wants with FedEx money your are a moron. He might have founded the company, but he sure is hell doesn't own all of it, or even a majority share. There are plenty of people with alot invested in that place that would **** a brick if they found out their investment is being used to fund a college basketball coaches salary. If you had money in FedEx, wouldn't this bother you at all? Plus, there's this little thing called the Board of Directors that would kill any significant compensation going out the door to some guy who doesn't create value to FedEx. These things are looked at by more than one person. This isn't some rogue sole proprietorship - it's a freaking Fortune 100 SEC registrant.

Appears to be all for naught though - look like it is all but official that he's going to UK.

How many coaches have won titles at two different schools?

Kentucky's peers (UNC, UCLA, and Kansas) all hired guys who showed they could build programs but hadn't won a title, and 2 have since won national titles and the other had a three year Final Four streak broken this year.

if you are conservative fiscally, that is a shock to me. I mean who really gives a **** what a guy gives to keep a coach a here. would you be bitching if I was worth over 2 billion dollars and I paid a couple mil to keep Stans here? (cause I would if I had it or had to.) I'm sorry if I offended your sensitive nature. If you don't care what he is doing with his money than what the hell are you complaining about? Did you really think Fred was going into his shareholders earnings or cash reserves and saying, "hey, lets keep coach cal here.?" Are you serious? Fed Ex is one of the top companies in America. Do you really think that their CEO would use company funds to pay for a basketball coach? And I hope that you are through with this discussion because you are a dipshit

the last 3 coaches at KY to win titles had never won a title prior to coaching there.

you have got to be the dumbest mother <17>er alive. </p>

1) I'm not bitching about about Fred spending his own money. I wish MSU had a hundred Fred Smiths - not only for athletic donations but for academic advancement (more-so, really). The more money the merrier.</p>

2) If you took the time to read what I posted and who it was in response to, you can clearly see that I responded to a poster who stated that Fred could do anything he wanted with FedEx money because "he owns the place". Read what I posted for a third time. Maybe this time you can comprehend. So to answer your question, no, Fred wasn't going to dip into reserves to pay Cal - THAT WAS CLEARLY MY ORIGINAL POINT.

Fine. To be fair, I misquoted you. You didn't say "he owns the place". For that, I apologize. You said, "<span class="post-title">It's his damn company, he can do whatever the hell he wants". I have no idea how I could misinterpret that statement into thinking that you actually believe he can do whatever he wants. Obviously, I'm a little slow.

I'll STFU now. It's a minor miracle this thread hasn't locked yet.</span>
