Where are the spots to hit postgame? The traditional spots I used to hit back when Memphis was an annual trip are now closed (Pat O's, Platinum). I hear that New Raiford's isn't open but for Friday and Saturday nights. A little help here..<div>
</div><div>Also, is the goat at Silky's still alive?</div>

He said that it had really gotten bad. I have not been to Memphis in years so I don't know but I was surprised to here that Beale Street had gotten that bad. Don't know if this is true but this is what I was told.

There is nothing dangerous about Beale Street. In fact the entire downtown district is remarkably cleaned up. There are tons of restaurants and bars down main street that add some different choices. I spend a good bit of time photographing on Beale and downtown in general and there is absolutely nothing dangerous about it.

ETA: It is an urban area. So there is always the possibility of some **** happening. Treat it like you would if you were in Nashville, New Orleans, Atlanta, etc.

Last time I was there I had a great time on Beale Street. The "friend" that told me this is a guy that I know from work. It would not be surprising to find out that he is wrong.

You gotta stand in line and get wanded no matter where you enter, and they check everyone. If you ever get outside of the bubble that is your county ,and actually travel then it's only as dangerous as the idiot you're following around into the wrong places. It's a city...

Thursday night is college night on Beale. I love hanging out at Silky's listening to either the dueling piano's or sitting on the patio listening to a band.I don't care much for dance club's anymore like Alfred's.

as far as being safe? Comparing Nashville with the others is like putting Starkville in the same category as Memphis and Jackson. I think you've got a less chance of seeing a cowboy hat in Nashville as being mugged in Memphis.

just pointing out that in any decent size city you can find trouble. You should always pay attention to where you are and where you are going. Park your car in a blind alley, even in downtown Nashville, and you are asking for some trouble. Stick to public places with people and you are good.

I mean the place stays packed at night. Who is going to mug you in the middle of Beale with a 1,000 people in eye shot? <div>
</div><div>Age brings a lot more caution with some people. Places can get better and if they see one bum, they say the place has went to ****. In reality 10 years ago they walked by 5 bums with tunnel vision straight to the bar. </div><div>
</div><div>Hell when I was 21 and still stupid I wouildn't have cared if someone jumped out and tried something... Meant I could skip my workout for the day after giving a crackhead the once over. Now I'm older.. slower...fatter...and more lazy... I stick to the pack so you lessen any chances in a questionable area. </div>

Memphis is still a ******** and always has been. Coming from a person who has spent plenty of time in all three cities, Nashville is much much safer than Memphis. There are plenty of places to have fun on Beale. The problem is walking into and out of the bars. Beale "street" is the problem. Not the bars on Beale Street.

and your post pretty much shows that you are full of ****. Memphis used to be bad, about 10 years ago, and the city started working to clean up downtown. AutoZone park was built, Main Street was revamped and became home to tons of restaurants and bars, and everything between the Peabody and Beale was redone. The Warehouse district has gone through a transformation as well, mainly restaurants, high-end condos, and art galleries now, the area is safe and fun.

I spend most weekends downtown taking photographs. I spend at least one weekend night a month on Beale Street and usually more. Over the past five years I have probably spent around 200 nights down there and I have never seen anything more than some stupid drunk behavior. I usually park down main at a friends condo and I walk back around 2:00a in the morning and I have not felt nervous one time (hard to feel nervous when there are full bars the whole way).

So, if you really have spent time in Memphis lately and you were still scared then I can only assume you are either A) a complete ***** or B) generally scared of black people. Yes, we have black people in Memphis. Lot's of em. Guess what? They aren't all trying to shoot and rob you. In fact, most of them are really nice and no more dangerous than your average white guy.

In much the same way that MSU has had a change in attitude I think that Memphis has as well. I live here and I'm going to be damned if I'm going to sit by and let some ignorant ******* run down this city. Memphis has some dangerous places no doubt, and I don't think any of us are going to suggest you head into Orange Mound looking for a party, by that does not mean the entire city is messed up. We have worked our asses off to cleanup downtown, to bring in restaurants and nice bars, to improve everything about the city. We've done a good job.

So please quit talking out your ***.

Bravo aed. The city makes sure everything stays safe downtown because of the police presence. Now if you want to talk local govt that's a different story, although that has improved some.

Back in the 80's/early 90's it was a ********. I have some friends that live in some of those new condos in the warehouse district. It's unreal the changes that have been done up there.

I have a friend that lives in a condo right across the street form the Farmer's Market. I either park in front of her condo on Front and ride the trolley to Beale, or I park in Peabody Place. I would love to have a condo in that area just to have easy access to all the bars, Redbirds, and Grizzlies games so I don't have to drive back to the Shaven.

The idiots that bash Memphis remind of the national media who bash Starkville even though they haven't been there in a decade

I played music in the bars on Beale for years...Never had a single problem. I've been down there at all hours of the night...carrying sound equipment and guitars and what not. Are there times when it feels sketchy? Yes, but that can be said about anywhere you go in a big city.

I'll put it this way...if its safe enough downtown for all the little kids to go watch the Redbirds...then its safe enough for some big college football fan

There is a significant police presence on Beale and the downtown business areas. And being that it is the night of a football game, there will be even more most likely.

I get so tired of these small town people just repeating all the nonsense they hear about the big bad Memphis. I have live here all my life...its no where near as bad as people make it out to be. Yes, North Memphis is a cesspool. But every area has its bad parts.

About the game...yes, the liberty bowl is next to Orange Mound...but the mound is not near as bad as out of towners make it out to be. It is a low income area...but somehow we manage to have football games at the Libertybowl every year without rapes and murders and cars being set on fire.

Just use big city common sense if you are from a small town. And this applies whenever you travel somewhere unfamiliar. Do not leave anything in your car you cant live without. Thats just common sense.

MEM:Call A Cab (if Wet Willy's is still there)

might be better off going to The Blue Monkey or the like in midtown. haven't lived there in 6 years so i don't know if there's any new spots to hit. best hole in the wall place for karaoke is Yosemite Sams in midtown but it's very hole in the wall. Silky O'Sullivan's(near the pyramid)was pretty fun.

edited to add: now living in MS, i envy the multitude of beer options at the Flying Saucer...the days...

and it was fine. Beale was rockin. Kind of surprised at the pat-down to get on the street. But if your concern is safety, that should make you feel better. I will say this, I thought New Orleans was about as bad as it got for beggars/homeless. I was wrong. Memphis is a lot worse in that regard. But there are simple ways to avoid that.

And Rendezvous was freaking awesome.
