I've never understood where anyone would have us in the pre-season Top 10 or 15 in baseball this year.

We may end up developing into a pretty good team later in the year, and if we do, I'll buy into this team. But right now, it's hard to understand where the hype is coming from. You lose guys like Satterwhite, Lynn, and Overbeck off a team that was just average the year before, and people somehow expect you to be significantly better. Makes no sense to me. I get the feeling we're going to take a lot of embarassing lumps this year.

Baseball polls are even more of a guess than football and basketball polls, so the pollsters tend to rank the teams they're used to ranking. We used to get that in the early 90s every year. We'd always start out ranked in the top 10 and then never do much in the regular season or postseason. Eventually the polls figured out that we just weren't as good as we used to be and quit ranking us. Then we screwed them by going to back-to-back CWSs for the only time in our history.</p>

You're probably right, but I think we're only a year or two away from losing those name recognition votes. Maybe someone on here could explain to me how anyone thinks we're a Top 10 baseball team for any other reason than possible name recognition. Even most of our homers were having a hard time understanding the pre-season hype. We do have some decent players, and we may have a lot of guys step up and become a really good team, but on paper, it just doesn't make sense for us to be ranked there at this point.
