Mexico is finally starting to make some noise, and should be up 1-0. That was an atrocious off sides. Defender was standing in the damn goal.

The rule is 2 defenders behind the ball. Look it up. The goalie almost always counts as 1 but watch the replay, he was in front of the forward. It's totally excusable for fans to not know this but I really can't believe the commentators have no clue.

Ok wait. So the RSA guy standing at the post doesn't count?

Edit... hold on, I think I got it. I'll need to go look at the replay, but he was behind the goal keeper as well wasn't he? Thanks Mr. Announcer guy.

More edit: And y'all are right. Didn't even notice the keeper had come forward. Just saw the guy at the post, heard the announcer calling it horrible, and assumed he was right.

Wow I've played soccer all my life and never knew that rule....I guess it's such a freak occurrence I've never seen that rule put into play.<div>
</div><div>So if the keeper comes forward and the offensive team gets behind him, there has to be at least two defenders behind the keeper for it to be offsides?</div>

I thought they were doing the Macarena. Then they started doing the bull dance, feeling it... feeling it.

Who was supposed to win..RSA since they are the host? I heard something about a host has never lost opening round or ever or something.

Btw..sad day for Nelson Mandela if you havent heard...his great grand-daughter died in a car accident and he will not be at the games today..

Mexico is supposed to be the much better team, but there seems to be something special to hosting and your first game.

What in the hell happened to the RSA defense there? All of the sudden they just weren't around the ball.

Most of the time I have no clue what is going on as I really dont understand the calls and rules
But the environment of the games and the fan suck me in.. the fans of "football" from every other team in the world except America are just amazing.

Like for example what is the horn in the background of this game???

He would not have been deemed offsides had he been the second touch.Itwas the 3rd touch by attacking side that madeMEX offsides. There are no offsides on corners, throw-ins, and goalkicks by attacking side.</p>

Just making sure that people not watching the game understand it wasn't like the first touch ended up at aMEX defenders feet right off goalline and he finishes and they called offsides. If that had happenned, we would all agree it wouldn't have matteredif the keeper had shathis pantson top of theD while circle-jerking his teammates, it would have been agoal.

about what the six-packers think ... i think it's the fact that the announcers should have know the rule and been able to explain.

Only exception is if the pass is a backwards pass. Then there's no offsides even if there are no defenders between the offensive player and goal.</p>

Damnit I hate ties in anything...
Cause there's gonna be a whole lot of blowouts and ties. You may want to tune out until the knockout stage starts in a couple of weeks. There won't be any ties then, and fewer blowouts too.

Little touchy there. I, along with a lot of people, probably thought the off sides rule just didn't apply to the goalie. Thus, seeing a defender standing at the post, I figured the announcer was spot on with calling it a terrible off sides call. Some of us just weren't aware that the rule said you had to be behind or level with two defenders. The goalie just happens to be one of the two 99% of time, thus my confusion which was aided on by the announcer who should have definitely known the rule. I appreciated the clarification actually. That was definitely a play that doesn't happen that often.

Hell, I watch Stanley Cup and Olympic hockey and couldn't tell you what the hell icing is.
