Wayne County is way down from when I was in high school 10 years ago. New number is 983; it was somewhere around 1050 back in 2004. Either folks are having less kids, or we've had some significant numbers of people move out of the county.

Moss Point at 643 is pretty alarming as well. That high school used to be one of the largest in the state. Now they are a class 4A which is basically the old 3A classification.

So Vicksburg and Warren Central won't ever be completely combined.....

That would be nearly 3,000 students...

The number of people that live in the halo of Jackson is pretty surprising to people that don't frequent the metro. Just looking at the infrastructure that's gone into those areas in the bast 5 years you can tell what the population is doing.

Amazing how many small rocks there are to look under recruiting. Some of the best players in the country go to schools with less than 600-700 students.

Interesting stuff, thanks for posting.

Desoto County is ridiculous. 8 schools, approximately 10,000 students.

It says it includes 9-12 so if a school has a separate 9th grade school like rosa scott does madison centrals number include that or is it just 10-12?

On the other end of the spectrum, three of the 16 smallest schools in the State are in Prentiss County--Wheeler (128), Thrasher (118) and Jumpertown (104). Consolidation anyone?

The 1A classification needs consolidating in a bad way. Some of the schools like Dexter barely scrape by. From a funding standpoint it makes sense but just from an education standpoint those kids can't be learning as much as kids with more resources. Regardless of class size.

Hattiesburg moves down to 5A. Not surprising really, but they have been in the same classification as all the biggest schools for a very long time, so that's something to note.

The three county schools in Holmes County consolidated this year. If I recall correctly, McClain, Williams-Sullivan, and Marshall were all 2A schools and it appears that Holmes County Central will be a 5A school.

Edit to add: Durant wasn't included since it's in its own separate municipal district.

Clinton is one of the top school districts in the state. It was the #1 school district as ranked by the state department of education last month.

Wayne Academy has been the fastest growing private school in the state for the past 2 years and they had to start turning away students in some grades this year. I would imagine private school is where a lot of the kids are ending up.

Too much space action thanks to the tables--

MHSAA has recently kept the 2A - 4A even with the remaining lowest going to 1A. Unofficially, I'd say that there will be 48 schools each in 2A, 3A, and 4A. 1A will have 47.

4A -- it looks like the school with the most enrollment is East Central. Magee has the lowest enrollment.
3A -- Port Gibson has the most enrollment. Heidelberg has the least enrollment.
2A -- Winona has the most enrollment. Sacred Heart has the least enrollment.
1A -- Stringer & Bogue Chitto have the most enrollment. The School for the Blind has the least enrollment.

You are right, their enrollment has picked up. They used to be Academy 1A with about 150 students Preschool through grade 12. Now they are Academy 2A with close to 300 students. I think part of that has been some of the junk that has been going on with administration at the high school. Clara elementary and middle school are still popular choices with great academics, but the rest of the schools in the county have been received D level scores for about 10 years now. A lot of folks from my generation (who have elementary age kids now) don't want to send their kids to the county's public schools because of that. I expect that trend to continue.

Consolidation is going to be the name of the game going forward, in many facets of life/business. Especially in rural areas like are so prevalent in Mississippi. But even those schools will continue to decrease unless some positive engine is introduced. If that doesn't happen, may as well keep all the small schools open on their own, because consolidation does you no good.

I think Greenville may be a better fit in Region 2 but I don't know if Starkville or Columbus would take its place in Region 1 (edit to add now that I've thought about it - I think it'd be easier for Columbus to be in Region 1).

It's odd to see Hattiesburg and Laurel in the same classification.

It's hard to believe just a few years ago that there would be high schools at Lake Cormorant and Lewisburg and that they would be 5A. Crazy growth,

It's not slowing down either from what I hear from people in the area. Tunica may be stalling out but Desoto County seems prime for an even bigger boom.

Yep, in my neighborhood in Hernando, there were about 10 empty lots when we moved in last year. They all have houses on them now. Houses going in everywhere.

What are the big businesses in Desoto County nowadays? I hear there is a big push to not necessarily 'break' from Memphis (it'll always be the Memphis metro), but for Desoto to establish its own identity per se. Tate too. I guess with I-269 coming there will be ample opportunity, especially in the 'crosshairs' or so they call it of 55/69.

As as a former Prentiss county resident I'll give you the answer..." Eeeefff we cunsilidate the skooos then they can't play basketball aginst each otha!"

you dont even have to consolidate them. You can bulldoze all three and send wheeler to Baldwyn and Thrasher and Jumpertown to Booneville and New Site.

We picked Clinton for the school district. when you have constantly one of the best public schools in the state, why not? it's now #1 District.

I like to think my two genius kiddos being enrolled there have something to do with that ranking, haha.

In all seriousness, we love the Clinton schools too.
