Former NFL coach Jon Gruden becoming the next coach of the Miami Hurricanes "definitely still is in play," a UM source with knowledge of the situation said Tuesday.

According to the source, discussions have continued between the two sides even though Gruden released a statement through ESPN Sunday night that, "I am committed to 'Monday Night Football' and to ESPN."

Gruden, 47, won a Super Bowl as coach of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers before he was fired in 2008 and became a TV analyst. He previously coached the Oakland Raiders.

According to the source, Gruden and Miami have yet to agree upon the
length of a contract and there's concern on UM's part about Gruden, who
has limited college experience, jumping to the NFL. Money doesn't appear
to be an issue in negotiations, the source said.

According to the source, Mississippi
State coach Dan Mullen likely would be the Hurricanes' next choice if
an agreement isn't reached.

Gruden has college coaching experience, but not as a head coach. He was a
graduate assistant at Tennessee (1986-87), quarterbacks coach at
Southeast Missouri State (1988), and receivers coach at Pacific (1989)
and Pittsburgh (1991).

Nick Saban did the same thing to Bama when he was with the Dolphins- until he got the money that he wanted. That may be what Gruden is doing to Miami.

Take this for what it is worth. But I just spoke to a friend of mine in Miami who is not even a Miami fan but knows one of the Board of Trustees at the University. He said that Gruden has accepted a deal for 4 years at $15 million and it will be announced tomorrow or Thursday. They have been working on this since they fired Shannon. He said one of the holdups has been the Buccaneer contract, that he is still getting paid from. Anyway he even said that Gruden was bringing his brother as OC. I hope this is true and I have no reason not to believe him.

Does he really want to glad hand every alumni SOB that walks up, etc.?

A job like college coaching is like working for a country club, your got hundreds of bosses that think they can tell you what to do, because they pay $.

Otherwise, I think... the $ is not a problem, means that he has plenty of $ and is not doing this only to get paid, ...has to work through other issues.

Just my thoughts.

Not much of chicken dinner circuit for boosters there. It's about as close to a pro football as exists in college. Little traveling required for recruiting. Little booster bs to deal with. He would be a good fit there and would win big I think.

In the pros, they are drafted, and sort of locked in. The GM works thought the details. Yes, you evaluate players...combines etc.
The GM negotiates contacts, etc.

But college is helter skelter, please come play for us, and what ever else. (except Auburn)
