Daniel Stegall (I believe that's his name) was a 2006 QB signee with the U. He signed with the Mets and played in the minors for 4 years. It is rumored that his school will be paid for by the Mets, as part of his contract. He is 6-3 185 and other SEC teams wanted him to walk on at their school.

Ark and Auburn also asked him to walk-on so that seems like an indication he might have some ability.

but i believe regular walk-on players can't join the team until school starts, which I think was today. Invited/preferred walk-ons can start when camp starts.

This kid looks good running the football. I like the way he switches the ball to the outside hand like a running back would. I see a few issues with his footwork and ball placement, but I know he'll be able to work those out.

Good pickup!

Looks like the Mets will, in fact, be paying for one of our scholarships.

Stegall returns to football

Tuesday, July 21, 2009 12:46 PM CDT

Leland Barclay, Special to the Democrat

Daniel Stegall's professional baseball career may be over, but his athletic career is definitely not.

Stegall was released by the New York Mets two weeks ago after four seasons in the minor leagues. Stegall batted .219 with six home runs in 245 games over four seasons, all on the Class A level or below.

"Baseball is what I'm in love with," Stegall said. "It's tough, but I gave it my best shot. It didn't work out."

Stegall has been in Greenwood recently, working out and getting ready to resume a football career.

"There's nothing official, but there's a couple of schools I'm talking with," Stegall said. "This is just my second week of working out and trying to get back into football shape."

Stegall did pitch for the Florida Marlin scouts last week.

"I threw a (bullpen session), but I don't think pitching is what I want to do," Stegall said.

In 2006, Stegall became the first football player from Greenwood to sign a Division I football national letter of intent.

He capped a record-breaking career for the Bulldogs with a state championship in 2005, but Stegall decided not to play football for the Miami Hurricanes after being selected in the seventh round of the June draft by the Mets.

Stegall, who will turn 22 in September, is now set to follow a familiar path for many baseball players once that sport is over, returning to college to pursue football. Among the schools that Stegall has already talked to are Ohio University, Mississippi State, Auburn and Arkansas.

During his junior season at Greenwood, Stegall operated Greenwood's Spread offense almost flawlessly by throwing for 2,065 yards and running for 1,022. He was the first quarterback in state history in a big-school classification to pass for more than 2,000 yards and run for more than 1,000 in the same season. In 2005, he duplicated the feat with 2,546 passing yards and 1,475 rushing yards.

In his career, he accounted for 97 offensive touchdowns and also returned an interception for a touchdown during his junior season.

Stegall does not plan on returning to college until the 2010-11 season. That allows him to take advantage of a clause in his baseball contract that provides for eight semesters of college to be paid for by the Mets.

"I'm watching video, reading coverages and working out," Stegall said. "That's what the next few months are for.

could be the "running QB" that Mullen likes to use along with Russell, who is more of a traditional passer.
