That's a tough one. Davis is more of a bowling ball. He also played behind a far better OL than Dixon has. Dixon is faster, more athletic, and a better receiver.

I have been critical of Dixon. But he took it to a new level on Saturday.

Give me Dixon.

JJ was hurt and, I think, because of that game, he wasn't nearly what we needed him to be in Atlanta against UT. I think we still would have beaten UM without JJ and with a week of rest, he would have been a difference maker in the championship game.

If I remember correctly, he had pulled his groin against Ark the previous week, and JWS put him in at Ole Miss on a goal line situation. He got the ball and hurdled the pile to score landing on his shoulder and dislocating it. He was our best player on that team, and he couldn't play in the SEC CG because of that. With him, he might have pushed us over the hump and won against UT. Of course, the Ole Miss game was a must win game to win the west so it's debatable whether he should have played.

JJ pulled the hammy the week before the Arkansas game against Alabama when he ran for about 40 yards in the last minute of a game we already had well in hand. Jackie's decision to run it up on Bama cost us the SEC title that year.

Johnson's numbers could have been even better had it not been for a nagging groin injury down the stretch of the season.

Johnson was held out of the Arkansas game (a loss) that season and was limited against Ole Miss (played just one half but scored twice) and Tennessee in the title game.

"You look back and wonder what you could do different," said Johnson. "And I catch myself day-dreaming some days. But I really wished I could have played at Mississippi State for four years. Life doesn't always pan out like you want it to and I have no complaints because it worked out for me pretty well.

"I look back at missing the Arkansas game and wondered what would have happened if I could have played. And then I look back at what could have happened if I had been healthy against Tennessee (in SEC Championship Game)."

But he did manage to score a pair of short touchdowns against Ole Miss and the Egg Bowl, clinching the West title for the Bulldogs.

"It is frustrating any time an injury limits you," said Johnson. "It wasn't a pulled groin but it was strained and just one of those nagging injuries. I tried to get better but it was hard with all of the big games we had. I could not get over it and be completely healthy.

"But I remember Chris Rainey had a great game at Ole Miss. Man, he ran hard that night. Once we got close to scoring, Coach Sherrill put me in because I had a nose for the end zone."

Johnson was a former junior college transfer and was a mid-year signee in the Class of 1997. Before playing in the SEC, Johnson starred at East Mississippi Community College.

Uhhhhhh, We did not lose to Arkansas that year. How can any State fan forget beating Arkansas in 98? That game was for the West.

When JJ says, what might have been. He must be referring to stats.
