Monetary penalties are not a major deterrent! Money can be recouped from other sources.

''The NCAA's Committee on Infractions ruled on the University of Michigan's advanced scouting case on Friday, per ESPN sources, with the school facing a significant fine of the loss of two years of postseason football revenue but avoiding punitive penalties like a postseason ban.''

They didn't strip them of their championship so the cheating was worth it in their eyes.

Auburn taught the world how to cheat. Cheat big enough to win big and the NCAA won't do anything to you.
$30 million isn't chump change, especially in the revenue sharing era. This might have some impact.

I say that, now that you've made paying college football players several different ways legal, go ahead and legalize everything. Don't even pretend that the entire enterprise is other than ruthless and mercenary.

Portnoy already said it is "couch change". Michigan alumni are loaded, $30 million spread out over a few years won't even move the needle for them. They will simply give NIL money to players to make up for the lost scholarship money. Their athletic department revenue for 2024 was $230 million, Carolina's was $183 million. Even if they paid the entire penalty in one year their net revenue would still be $17 million more than Carolina's.

This is a slap on the wrist.
