Whittingham REALLY wanted no part of private equity.
I would like to know his reasons for being so opposed to it. I am not saying he is right or wrong. I don't know enough about how it is going to work.

It will also be interesting to see how it works out for Utah. They effectively ran off the program's winningest coach to take on PE.

His DC has head-coach-in waiting and Whittingham thought it was time to pass the torch after this bounce back year and look at other opportunities. I don’t now if PE had any impact on his decision at all, but he is joining a conference that is going to PE route for 10% ($2.4B) of B1G’s media and sponsorship rights.

He’s going to one of the 2-4 schools that are vetoing that deal.

So we will put you in the group that believes Kyle Whittingham is the first coach in history to change jobs because of private equity. Your meetings will be small but a barrel of laughs.***

That’s a pretty outlandish take. Utah was the first and only school to ever strike a PE deal for their athletics.

He may very well be the first coach to change jobs because of private equity….or maybe not. Only Whittingham knows his true reasons. But one thing is for certain is that he’s the first coach to ever even have the opportunity to leave over PE, because all this is uncharted territory.

I’m sure he doesn’t like the odious corruption that comes with PE, but I’ll bet you Michigan had back channels to his agent and this is a heck of an opportunity to be the head coach at Michigan, they are going to be really tough with a coach like Willingham

I mean… has another college coach had the opportunity to leave over private equity? Its inclusion in college athletics is extremely young. It’s not like saying “he’d be the first AD ever fired over baseball”.

You can act like an аss about it if you want, but his announcement that he’s stepping down (and not retiring) was timed pretty closely to Utah’s announcement that it was taking on private equity investment and he’s going to one of two Big Ten teams that have come out publicly against private equity.

Could be coincidence, but I don’t think it’s as outlandish as you’re acting.

Yep.

12-10 Michigan fires Moore and after him and Harbaugh, the next hire needs to be someone squeeky clean... Like a mormon.

12-12 Whittingham steps down. Careful to not say retire. The AD at Utah is fine with it because he's afraid of losing his coach in waiting.

I'm guessing the deal was done on 12-11. Whitt has 5 good years. Michigan or something like it will never come around again. They waited a few weeks to make it look cleaner on both ends, but this was a no brainer for everyone involved.

The financial side of college sports has become Organized Crimish. There’s only a handful of people at each school who know everything. There’s millions of dollars flowing behind closed doors with no accountability. Each team is run like a little crime family in competition with other families and each team hiding secrets from the other teams. It’s gotten out of hand.

It might make sense, but it wouldn’t take 2.5 weeks to announce if the deal was done on 12/11. I highly doubt the deal was done then, and many Michigan fans were very disappointed in the hire. I think there were several calls made prior to Whittingham.

Yeah. It’s real easy for people to read more into things than is really there.
