I may be wrong on this but maybe 318 wins. Great coach. Mike Smith 500 wins Hampton. 50 years coaching. Crazy. Salem has played both of these coaches.

His total head coaching wins are actually 344 between Parkview and Stone Bridge. He’s the only head coach Stone Bridge has known in their 22 seasons of play. 11 championship game appearances for Stone Bridge in those 22 seasons. Quite remarkable. In his early days he would talk about building a program like Salem or Hampton, where each fall you felt like you had a shot regardless of who was returning. Mike Smith is the gold standard for Virginia high school football, 500 wins is other-worldly.
I stand corrected, I believe it is 314 wins for Coach Thompson. Nonetheless, an amazing total.

Yes I saw the Patriots play the Salem Spartans in 1999 state championship in 4a. Salem ended up winning 21-20 at Bridgeforth Stadium. Mickey Thompson and Willis White were the coaches.
That was one heck of a game. PV missed a long field goal at the end. Went up 14-0 early on a Salem squad that had just absolutely ran roughshod through the competition that season. Didnt make it to the title game but watched them destroy an Amherst County squad that had just dropped down from AAA, 58-0. I believe the score was 44-0 at half. Andy Mullins and Dennis Haley were something else, they also had a receiver whose name escapes me right now.. ?
What struck me watching the game was the great crowds from both teams the respect from both coaching staffs. Mickey Thompson after the game said he was outcoached. By stating this I am not implying anything but simply stating that Mr. Thompson is humble and therefore a lifelong learner and I thought he would go on to great things and he has. The game was strange in that Park View controlled the time of possession, had more rush yards, but stabbed themselves a few times with penalties. Salem made big plays. Willis White said after the game it was like playing Giles County on steroids. Giles County employs the single wing in single A.
