Magical against tough oponents, completely out of it at times against lesser opponents.
random thoughts because I don't think we need another thread...
Looking back, this run of non-NCAA births (save the run through the SEC tourney) started with Bost, Ravern, and Kodi. This year was a last ditch effort to save four years of poor recruiting, and while Bost and Moultrie seemed to click on set lobs, there was just never a chemistry on the floor. I think we all assumed Bost was the leader of this team, but I personally never felt he ever took control of it and played the role of a good team leader. Mixing Renardo in there didn't help at all either. The last decent run were Rhodes and Gordon's last two years. Sure, there was some turmoil, always is. But when they stepped on the court, you knew it was those two guys in charge. Love or hate the way they played at times, it was their team. Nobody has taken control of this team in the last three years.
I liked what I saw out of Steele last night, and I've liked a lot of what he's shown this year. He may not ever be the best on the floor, but I see an opportunity for him to take control of the team next year. And I hope he can get to Lewis. I think he could be very good if someone would put some effort into lighting a fire under him. Maybe Steele will do that.
And yes, ata higher level it is the coaches job to see that this stuff happens. He needs to recruit and build a player up to assume control of a team. Then, at some point, that player has to stop looking up to a coach for leadership and take over himself. The last three years have been a complete failure at both.</p>
