AN EXCERPT:

WVU completed the 2016 schedule last year by signing a one-game contract with the Football Championship Subdivision’s Youngstown State, which hired former Nebraska coach Bo Pellini in the offseason. That figures to be the end of a particular trend for WVU, which is 15-0 against FCS teams.

“Our goal is that will be the last FCS team we schedule, at least for the foreseeable future,” Hammond said.

I am glad to see the end of the FCS games. Not a good bargain on the ticket cost.

I doubt this announcement is so the future opponent will be Marshall. They do not want to play in Morgantown or do one and dones or even 2 for 1s which is why their SOS is pretty much in the ridiculous area. There are FCS programs that play a tougher SOS than Marshall.

I hope the announcement means more neutral site games. I like playing a schedule where the home schedule for season tickets is good and if it is a neutral site game, the opponent can be good (BAMA, VT, BYU) or bad (JMU), but I'm not required to pay for it unless I want to see it.

Baylor should follow suit. It cost them last year and could cost them in the future.

This is excellent news. Nothing against FCS programs, but these games against lower-division opponents never should've been allowed in the first place.

The NCAA had encouraged payday games to help the lesser schools financially.
But the Power-5 and national playoff has changed the landscape. It IS important who you play (and, of course, how you do when you play them).

WVU is situated so that, if it's Big 12 champ (with 0 or 1 loss, and not co-champs at Baylor and TCU were), there's a good chance the Mountaineers would be in the national playoffs.
I think it's preordained that the national playoffs will expand to 8 teams because with 5 in the Power-5, pure math says one conference champ will be left out every year and that won't sit well. Look at all the gnashing of teeth over Baylor and TCU being passed over.

If the Big 10 is shut out, which could happen because conferences are cyclical, think the Big 10 won't be screaming for an 8-team playoff?

Agree with you here Go....I always figured these games were designed as an early season 'tune up'...what really drives me nuts is when P-5 programs schedule these puffcake games mid season or as late as Nov...I'll be overjoyed to see them gone from my ticket package too... as 3xEng says...
