I know I'm a cranky old man...but MONEY and the "ME culture" has ruined college sports. Gone are the days of any kind of team/university loyalty.

Not just players...coaching has definitely turned into a money based system. No coach or player does it for any motivation except $$$$$$ .

I guess it is just disappointing that Mike Ekeler ...a Nebraska guy....isn't motivated by his "god" status here in Nebraska enough to stay here in Nebraska.

It took the Ekeler situation for you to come to this conclusion? Because Rhule's money grab from the start and again this year with his whole Penn State charade to get even more money wasn't glaring enough? And Trev leaving?

no it did not take the Ekeler situation for me to come to this conclusion. Yes, Rhule has one thing on his mind and that is Mat Rhule.

As I have said on here previously (many times)...the Nebraska fan base is the cause of all the angst for this football program. The money continues to flow for this pathetic program despite the results and poor performance by coaches and players. Matt Rhule has received generational wealth from this university for a very lack luster result. This fan base is so enamored with being "the best fans in the nation" ...they don't know how to hold ANYONE accountable for performance despite shelling out millions of dollars.

Boy ain't that the truth. Our fans are like the parents who continue to enable their drug addict kid - always give him money to buy drugs, always bail him out of every stupid thing he does, look the other way every time he does some that hurts you, etc. The whole time thinking they're being such a great, supportive parent. When in actuality, the parents are a huge part of the problem.

Has he left?

The one good coordinator NEB has leaves?

Maybe the year we all pick Neb to win 4 games is the one we win 11

He worked for a head coach that just shopped himself around DURING THE SEASON in order to leverage an extension out of the AD.

Why would he stay for THAT guy?

....looks to me like he took a better job? (assuming he takes said job) Safe to assume he got a nice raise? California vs Nebraska? (assuming you have the $$$ which state would most people prefer to live in)

...maybe i'm missing something but i think we owe him an attaboy. We should all be so lucky/successful.

...add on top of that Rhule is probably going to last one more season and he'll be looking for a job this time next year anyway....

But has he actually bolted yet?

I will be surprised if Rhule is canned next year. Even with a 5 win or less season

...i'm not going to be surprised either way, but my prediction (which is worth exactly what you paid for it) is he's gone. They'll come to a buyout agreement and part ways. Be really happy to he wrong though.. as in he over achieves (yeah i barely got that out) and goes into the next season with some momentum.

You really think Matt Rhule would come to some sort of settlement agreement? The same guy who jumped at every raise he was ever offered, held Carolina to every penny of their contract when they fired him, played that against us for even more money to the detriment of his new team, then leveraged another job mid season for an extension as he went on to get butt raped with no lube on a national stage while playing dress up and laughing it up all the way to the bank? That Matt Rhule? Dude...

Hell no he won't take some buyout and why would he? I wouldn't, none of us would. He should take every penny.

No doubt. Just hope it's sooner than later.
I really think it will be sooner. If this season sucks, which I hope it doesn't and I hope that come week 10 they are still in playoff contention and I hope they pull off a badass upset during the regular season...

But if the season sucks. he has to be gone. He has done nothing here at NU that would give any (normal) fan the idea that he is "so close"

..would he do it today? No.

...if he wins 4 or 5 ganes next year and gets blown out in several? ..fans are all up in his business and he's lost all support?

I could see him wanting to leave the job and might be a little more flexible. Its been dun before.

...the important thang is he leaves. Don't really care about a reduced buyout. Its just my prediction becauae i doubt he'll want to still be here and knows he can't quit. But again, don't care. Just as long as he's gone.

Not even sure that's correct-He wants to be more than a special teams coach and is qualified to be more. Special teams coach by itself is the lowest position on the staff and many if not most teams dont even carry one. Its a lack of respect-
He held that position of LB'ers and Special teams at most past stops including Tenn-Georgia and USC and was told they would find a place for him on defense if he worked out on ST. By all accounts he worked out-give him a position title or at min a Co title and pay the man!

Eck loves to rotate through the same teams every 2-3 years. He has done this well before Rhule and Eck will be back in 5-7 years once again to continue the rotation.

It's kind of late in the process to go looking for other jobs isn't it? Rhule asked him to assist with coaching the bowl game.. It all just seems weird how at the last moment, there seems friction there..

How do we start the process to remove the AD?

I always find it interesting that people get upset that other people want to make more money.

For all of you that don't want more money, you can send me the money you have that you don't want. That way you won't feel bad for having money.

Ha, I didn't get upset about him wanting more money. I was simply pointing out that there is no way in hell that guy, Matt Rhule, would ever settle for less money (outside of some sort of scandal). He's shown nothing to indicate he is that type of person. Quite the contrary. And anyone hoping that's the key to us getting out from under his insane buyout is being incredibly naive.

Maybe...but it will come down to if Dannen wants to keep his job.

Dannen didn't hire him which means he can fire him AND get the chance to hire "his guy", which means Dannen gets 4+ more years of being the AD. He knows that.
Firing Rhule a year after giving him a big extension would be hugely embarrassing and essentially admitting that you made a huge financial mistake. I don't see Dannen doing that.

More embarrassing than just getting flat out fired himself? I think he'd take door number 2 if it were an "either Matt goes or you go" type deal.
If things get that bad, I think Dannen will get fired before (or with) Rhule. His decision to extend Rhule without any good reason will have cost the school (or a booster) millions of dollars.

Things are already that bad. That decision already has cost millions of dollars. We are now just in "trying to stop the bleeding" mode.

Yeah, and Dannen won't get to choose the next head coach. He already wasted his hire on Rhule with that ******** extension. That was his hire.

This is what I'm talking about. You cant have an organization full of idiots and be successful at the same time. Smh.

What a mess.

For one thing, I think Rhule and Ekeler's personalities tend to clash and you saw that in the press conference earlier in the season. Also, I don't know that Ekeler was expecting a spot at DC (would be pretty delusional) or at another defensive assistant position (much more reasonable) and Rhule said no? Could be reasons, but Ekeler also had the tendency to move around beforehand and maybe these message board rumors are way off base. Regardless if he's here or not, we've got to continue improving special teams. If he does leave, I wouldn't mind at all if he took his punter with him. I'm not someone who thinks he is irreplaceable, but he is a darn good coach.

I think Ekeler just likes to leave on his own terms rather than stay somewhere and end up getting fired. He's never stayed at any job more than a few years, in fact most of his jobs have only been 1 or 2 years.

Though the amount of assistant coach turnover that Rhule has had in 3 years has been concerning, especially for a so called culture/program building coach. The only ones still here in their original roles are Barthel and Dvoracek.

Rhule still has his feelings hurt since Ek celebrated too hard and made him cry on the sidelines. Players and other assistants loved it. He even made mention that Ek isn't allowed to touch him anymore. Super soft.

EK had our best unit this year and is a major reason we won 7 games. He deserves a chance for a promotion. He's an elite coach.

What are you doing to "try and stop the bleeding" besides posting on a message board?

Effective starting 2026, I'm done with my standard annual donation. Not a huge number but I'm certainly not going to continue to enable this garbage. Also done buying merch until we get a new coach. I live out of state so don't attend games anymore. But, if I still lived there, I can guarantee you I'd be done attending. And my TV viewership already went down substantially last year, which I assume will continue to decline.

What about you? What are you doing to "try to stop the bleeding" besides posting on a message board?
