I was thinking about schools similar to State and successes they have had in football.
When I was in school, I would go to a yearly conference for our major and about 25 southern universities would attend. Most if not all were land grant schools. At this conference most of us would always kind of buddy up with school/students that were most like us... Clemson and Auburn were kinda the same. A&M and VA Tech. And for us, at least me, we always kinda ended up with Oklahoma State people.
This was before T Boone really started dropping the big dollars into the school, but anyway. From the type of student to the school and even the towns (Starkville and Stillwater have similar vibes to me), Oklahoma State is really similar to Mississippi State in a lot of ways. At least in my opinion.
Well you should really go look at what Gundy has accomplished. This is his 17th season. Only his first (2005 at 4-7) was not a winning season. 15 consecutive bowl games and at 5-0 they may make a new years 6 this season. 142-67 overall. 30 games over .500 in conference. 6 different 10+ win seasons, including 12-1 and #3 BCS ranking in 2011 where the only loss was in 2-OT.
What a coach. I wonder if any of the big 5 will ever back up the Brink's truck for him? Can you imagine how much better A&M would be if they hired Gundy instead of Jimbo?
Anyhow, I think it has to be an alumnus for Mississippi State or Oklahoma State to keep a coach that good for 17 years. But Gundy is the man ...well over 40 now.
ETA: Nice read here. Gundy basically has nothing at QB and can't run his normal offense this year, so he is just plain out coaching his opponents.
