Mike Shula has joined the Gamecock staff as an analyst.

He's got the name, but can he claim the fame?
Some with family trees live up to them but some just ride their name for what it's worth.
Well, it is a good thing we did not hire him as the HC, or you might would have a point. lol
I like it. Why not? Dude will be another set of experienced eyes to help strategize on the offensive side of the ball.
He’s managed to stay employed in the NFL for 17 years, so I assume he knows some stuff.
17 years in the NFL…Why come to the College Ranks? Another “Name” to keep Beamer’s job? We will have a 4 to 7 win team next season. How long do we have to wait for a proven winner?!?!

I'm sure he and Loggains are very familiar with each other from their NFL days. Loggains probably just wanted another set of eyes that he trusts on the offense.
I love the nuts in this thread. Surely we would much rather have a grad student analyst who is just starting out. Why hire someone with so much experience? Lol
How much is he being paid? I've been watching football for a long time and want to apply for a position. lol
Maybe we should hire Muschamp as an analyst. While we are at it we could also hire Fat Brad as an analyst. We could have an "all name" team in our coaching staff.
FWIW, the Bama folks credit him for taking the program over during a challenging time and bringing in recruits who were part of the 2008-2009 teams.
I don't really think he's a big last name. It's just an analyst role.
I think this is more in keeping with Shane's obvious approach to hiring guys with NFL experience.
I guess "analyst" is a placeholder job for these guys. It gives them something to do while looking for an actual coaching job. Shula is 58 and probably has plenty of money. He may be looking for something to do for a couple years to get him out of the house until he can fully retire.
I really think Shane just saw an opportunity to add another guy to the staff who has a ton of NFL experience/ties. Whether or not his strategy of adding staff with NFL experience will pay off, it's clear this is the direction he's gone.
I think you might be right. I'm not sure how much the NFL experience adds to the college game coaching wise. The NFL has no recruiting, no development, no real teaching and the players are full time football players with all of their time available for football related activities. I guess Beamer wants guys around who can talk about the path to the NFL and what the NFL looks for.
Recruiting is the name of the game in college and I'm not sure how much Shula adds on that side of the equation. I may be over thinking this. It may be that Shula wants an easy job for a couple years and has a connection to Shane and Shane is throwing him a bone. I don't think the NFL has many analyst type jobs that aren't actual coaches.

So it makes sense you lose a former NFL coach as an analyst, you bring one in. If Coach Shula wants to return to the NFL, that is a selling point, look what happened to the previous guy, in one year. Also all the people that moved upward to new jobs, from last years staff that went 5-7, has to be attractive to for people looking for a job.
I also can't help but think, if Beamer and Shula had ever met prior they would have some common things to bond over, both being the sons of famous father football coaches in this business.
And for Coach Shula and what happened at Alabama, old news, you don't stay in the coaching game as long as Coach Shula has just because who your father was, he must have some coaching chops, and I view him as a welcome addition.

The top level of football coaching, college or NFL, is a tight knit fraternity. Once a coach gets in that upper tier they are pretty well assured of staying there as long as they want to. Look at Muschamp, Brad Scott, Derek Dooley, really all of them. Once a coach reaches on field coach at the FBS level he is pretty well set. If he is a head coach at any FBS school, he is definitely set for life regardless of what his record is if he wants to stay in coaching.
I don't think being analyst for 1 year at USC under Beamer = boost to the NFL.
Maybe, Maybe Not, time will tell, but Lembo and Wright got boosted to College Head Coaching jobs, maybe Beamer gives a great reference?

I don't know what an "Analyst" job description is. I just shrugged my shoulders regarding the hire. So, we now have a Shula to go along with a Beamer. Maybe together they can replicate their "Old Men's" success here.
I think this might be close, look at what coach saban said, all these guys care about now days is how much nil money can you get me and can you get me to the league, not much else matters!
This whole thing (imo) has a kinda coaches union retirement system feel to it where these universities that have more money than they can spend just create positions to look out for the guys with one foot out the door where success may have escaped them... keeping a paycheck going. I mean I may be way off but as I said, kinda feels that way

Wow, talk about a situation where a coach "really wants to be there". How many coaches will take a demotion to stay at a program so another coach can be hired? I was going by his position last season. I didn't know he had taken the demotion to make room for another coach.
