...That's my only real problem with Fox News (and I'm not trying to start a liberal/conservative debate, here). They'll try to sensationalize everything possible. .....But to obviously hope for the addition of foul play in that situation is ridiculous.

"You don't find it ODD that out of 4 big, tough guys.. only ONE was able to hang on? Nothing odd there to you??"

Yeah, pal.. I find it odd that ANY of them could hang on.

And then later talking to a Coastie: "Why is it at 2am that one man stayed with the boat and 3 others, not sure why they decided to, but got separated from the boat?"

Again.. yeah, pal. People voluntarily CHOOSE to let go of a floating object in the middle of the night in 15ft seas.

What a douche.

Well if he did not try to work in a "Hotty Toddy" or the name "Ole Miss" at a completely irrelevant time, then it was probably not Shep.

Shep: "When I see the dramatic pictures of this capsized boat, it reminds me of another sinking ship that was once the Ole Miss football program. That same Ole Miss football program that won the Cotton Bowl this year and I have to think that if that ship can be saved, than so can these people in distress. I know I will personally say a Hotty Toddy for the families tonight."

water the last thing you want to have on is a flip flop."

Really? Everybody knows that? Me...I'd prefer not to be treading water in the middle of the damn Gulf of Mexico. The flip flop would be the last damn thing I'd think about.

everyone knows that athletes can't float. Seriously; their low body fat numbers with lots of heavy muscle and dense bone structure is not good for treading water. Hopefully they were wearing life vests. That is their best chance. Certainly pulling for them.

Really? You were the only one that thought it was racist. Muscle mass in an athlete has nothing to do with color

This one is actually true. Athletes (and I'm assuming these guys are DBs or something and not fat *** linemen) have a much lower body fat percentage. Fat floats, so because they have less of it, the float less easily. The bone density thing is correct also. It's been shown that African-Americans have a greater increase in bone density after puberty. Asians actually have less increase than your average whitey. Of course, they were studying racial differences in bone density to figure out why osteoperosis was rare among black women, but denser bones means really do mean you float less easily.

However....

This is all well and good when applied to getting in the pool at your local YMCA. When miles away from shore, drifting in the cold open ocean with 9 foot swells, being a fat white guy isn't going to matter in the slightest.

/Really, it's all whether you may more or less than a duck.

It's about hypothermia setting in. The more muscle you have, the quicker you become hypothermic. I had to write a term paper on the subject in school. Their only chance was to stay with the boat and warm up during the day if they could.

Life jackets or not the water is cold, seas are rough, and they have been out there for a pretty long time. 10-15 foot swells and winds up to 40-50 knots, kind of hard to expect someone to hold onto the hull of a boat for over 24 hours.
