This is a picture I got today. The far strip of water is where the river is supposed to be. In between the tree lines is the "bar pits" where the levee was dug from. It's hard to see the depth in a picture but obviously the water is pushed up against the levee and is nearer to the top of it than I have ever seen it.

Here's a normal view from Google Earth. The Courthouse building you see in the above picture (large white top) is roughly where the two little yellow markers are on the Google image. You can also see the road that runs up the levee in the Google image. It's just a little bit out of frame (to the right) in the top picture.

I guess the Bunge Elevator down by Lake Bruin is underwater since it's over on that side. That's really a long way from the Levee to the River and uphill at that. I wonder what the Mississippi Side looks like?

Juat noticed Grand Gulf in the background, I wonder how much higher it is than the flood waters?

The Bunge one is just a few miles from my parents house. This is a picture of the elevator at Waterproof, about 10 miles south of the Bunge one. (That's the wing of the plane in the top of the frame.) Also a better perspective on the water relative to the height of the levee, also from the town of Waterproof.

If you are a snooty engineer or a Yankee, it's a borrow pit.

If you're a Southern boy unconcerned with technical talking, that damn hole is a bar pit.

Just like harrow (something you smooth a field up with) is supposed to be pronounced like its spell. Instead we say "haira". So a borrow pit to you sir is a bar pit to me.

My Grandmother worked for the River Commission back in the day and used to tell me stories about how they built the levees using donkeys pulling up dirt from those 'bar' pits. It's just stuck over these years. I'm sure it's just one of those things that folks shortened in a typical Southern way.
