It is a common misconception that the basepath extends in a direct line between one base to the next. The basepath is a line between the baserunner and the next base, and if the runner swerves to avoid a tag attempt (which is legal), the basepath moves with the runner. It is up to the umpire to determine if the runner's swerving goes beyond just avoiding the tag.
